Son wants to buy CAD
Hi,
for purposes of recording quality, I would recomend getting and external sound card. M-audio make a good range. You would need to have a +48v phantom power supply for this unit to work. The sound card you buy should have this. A Pc or laptop won't
CAD GXL2200 stopped working.
The first thing you can try is to unscrew the base by turning counter-clockwise, holding the body and screen together carefully. Then carefully slide the main body sleeve downward, and off. The rest of the mic is held together with a frame. You will be able to inspect all the internal wiring and solder joints for poor connections or cracks, The rear PC board is held on by two tiny Philips screws. Remove them and slowly lift the back PC board - it is connected by 3 short wires. This will just allow you to inspect the PC board for bad solder joints or cracks in the metal film. If that doesn't help, you may have to start removing and testing diodes and transistors etc. BTW, on the front board you will find a tiny lo-cut switch I'll bet you didn't know you had.
How do I connect my CAD GXL2200 mic to my apple laptop?
You need a USB interface such as an M-Audio M-Track and a standard XLR male to female audio cable.
You use the cable to connect the microphone to the interface using the XLR cable, then you plug the USB cable on the interface to a USB port on your laptop. Finally, you go to System Preferences - Sound - Input and select the USB interface as the input source.
Depending on the software you you use for recording sound (I use Sound Studio from Felt Tip Software) you may need to go into the Preferences for the program and select the USB interface.
I bought a GXL220
You need a 48volt phantom power supply and 2 balanced XLR microphone cables.
My gxl 2200 condenser mike is not working for my mix craft 6
The usual procedure when a mic is not working - check that the phantom power (+48V) is working, then try another cable. If the mic is out of warranty and you're low on bucks, you might have to fix it. Unscrew the base, carefully holding the body sleeve up against the screen. Then carefully slide off the body to expose the PC boards. Check the boards and wires for cracked copper film and bad solder joints. Two tiny Philips screws will allow you to remove the REAR board for full inspection of both. If all is good physically, start checking components with a multimeter. (if you don't know how, StartPage it.) The circuit is similar to the one below, EXCEPT there is a low cut switch on the CAD 2200. If you find a bad component, most of them are pretty cheap to replace.

The easiest way to do it properly would be to use a small mixer, with an adapter cable from the outputs (usually 1/4") to the line-in of the laptop (usually 3.5mm stereo).
What is the best way to run the mic on desktop
Your condensor mic requires special electrical handling usually reserved for proffesional audio equipment, not a PC. You will need two pieces of equipment, a short XLR cable and an adapter cable.1) Behringer PS400 Ultra-Compact Phantom Power Supply. This will supply the mic with necessary Phantom Power.2) Rapco Horizon ISOBLOX Transformer Isolation 1:1 BLOX Device This will isolate the Phantom Power from your computer, allowing it to work as necessary. The adaptor connector cable you need will be a female XLR (with pins 1 and 3 shorted, pin 2 hot), through a cable connect to a 1/8" mini plug. They connect in that order with a short XLR cable between 1) and 2). .

What USB adapter is best to use with the GXL2200?
If you're going to use a mixer anyway, it'd probably be better to run the mixer into the line-in of the computer. Even better would be to just get a USB recording interface, and do the mixing in the software.
Otherwise, Behringer, Alesis, Yamaha, and probably other all make USB mixers that should be of similar quality (i.e., very low).

I don't believe the GXL2200 has a power switch directly on the microphone itself. Would you be able to tell me how you are supplying phantom power to the microphone?
