It could be possibly the belt. or if not, possibly a wire grounding out.
Most likely the belt. If the motors on a bind or going bad, it can smell like that also

Either your switch, relay, Resistor or blower motor is bad. You can test them all.

Buy yourself a high current in line switch.
Have some one take the cord out for you.
Place the in line switch in the socket and plug in the cord.
You don't have to take the cord out.
Only switch the in line switch off.

Think Air FLOW. Air flow actually cools during normal use, so if flow is restricted, temps go beyond limits. Not what you want.
Here is an easy test: Pull dryer away enough to pull the exhaust hose off... Activate the dryer and form an opinion of the volume of air flow out of the back of the dryer.
Turn off, hook up the hose, Turn on again, go outside and likely you will find substantially lower air flow. I have seen installs that use a grill on the exit from the house. These clog up almost immediately.
Get the air flow working, your drying will be better.
My bet is something is clogged.
