Try running it outside where the oxygen level is 21%. Carbon Monoxide will kill you The smell might be the product if incomplete combustion CARBON MONOXIDE, or the fuel line pressure needs to be adjusted.

If you still get the smell the unit may defective. If you want to try adjusting the fuel line pressure, you will need a low pressure gauge 0-15 psi.remove a plug from the heater and set the pressure at the documented pressure, the other plug with the hole in it is the adjustment.

Does the flame go out when you let go of the button to lite it?
If it does, then the thermocouple is bad.

If the flame stays on, but goes out when you turn the dial,
the gas regulator is bad.

Probably a little more expensive to buy new then to fix it.

you will need a propane conversion kit designed for that particular model heater.
which would most likely consist of a heavier spring for the gas valve and orifices for the burners depending on how many burners you have.
Most all gas heaters come thru the factory set up for natural gas and most have a kit available for conversion to LP (Propane) You will also need a manometer or a gas pressure tester to check the incoming and outgoing pressures from the green (2ndary )regulator outside your house to the gas valve inlet side,usually 11 to 14" WC( water column) pressure( static) 14" being MAX!!
Outlet pressure with burners running 10-11" WC approx. This info should come with the conversion kit if available. If you are not comfortable working with gas then find someone who is, for safety reasons.

First thing to do is go to the furnace and look in the small peep hole in the lower blower door and see if there is an led light that is flashing a certain number of blinks record the number and look for a diagnostic chart on the inside of the blower door or the upper side panel of the furnace if there is no flash code present you can try resetting the power to the furnace and see if the furnace will fire up.

Hopefully, Becca the unit won't have to be replaced at this time. It sounds like the burner(s) is clogged and and needs to be cleaned To do this, turn the pilot light OFF and allow the unit to cool. Remove the front of the heater cabinet to access all of the inside workings. Carefully remove the 3 ceramic plaques and set them aside, where they won't get broken.Using a vacuum cleaner that has a hose, brush attachment and crevice tool. Vacuum all of the interior of the heater that you can reach with the brush attachment and crevice tool. Then turn your attention to the burner(s), Vacuum them thoroughly using the brush attachment, then switch to the crevice tool attachment and vacuum all the little holes on the top of the burner(s) thoroughly. Before reassembling the heater, carefully vacuum the ceramic plaques on both sides using the brush attachment. Be careful not to drop them. Then reinstall the plaques and the front of the heater cabinet.
Light the pilot and allow it to burn for 2 minutes, before turning the control knob to ON. Watch the plaques and the flames to see that burn as they should after turning it ON.

If the above didn't solve the problem, depending on the age of the heater, it may be time to replace it.

You have more than the baby to worry about. The Reddy Heater model you listed IS NOT approved for indoor residential. It is a construction heater, designed for very large, uninsulated, open areas and very temporary use. Putting a vent in is not a solution, as there is no way to safely do it.

Be safe, buy a residential gas heater. If it's going to be a primary heat source, it must be a vented heater, as it will be operating 24 hours a day.

The regulator for the 20Lb gas grill tank is probably the wrong size and the tank doesn't have enough pressure to light and sustain the heaters. However, before you do anything else (if you haven't already) is remove the fronts of the heater cabinets, so that the interiors and the burners can be thoroughly cleaned, as well as the pilot assemblies and the Oxygen Depletion Sensors (ODS). A shop vac with a hose and brush attachment work well for cleaning the interior and the burners. Canned compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with) is good for blowing out the ODS. All of the things I have listed are vitall to proper troubleshooting of the heaters, before gas is ever hooked to them.

A couple of things come to mind:

Restricted air flow. Check heater inlet and outlet. Remove any obstructions.

If the heater has been used in a dusty environment, it may simply need a thorough cleaning.

Inadequate propane supply. Make sure there's enough gas in the tank to facilitate combustion.

If the tank is full, turn of the tank valve and disconnect the hose from the tank. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose. Turn the tank valve on very, very slowly, until it's fully open and try relighting and operation of the heater.

If the thermocouple is for sure good then the problem would have to be in the gas valve....

If you need to replace the gas valve though you will want to check on the price first...they often are darn near the price of a new heater...

Have you done a co2 check also check the air flow into the unit and also the flue. Do you have an automatic damper on it if so then lock it in the open position and then fire the stove. If this does not work then it sounds like you gas valve is going bad. How old it the furnace and the piping and do you know the pressure going into the unit if its propane go tap the regulator sometimes in this hi lo weather you can get water that freezes in the line this happened to me on my gas fireplace.

Did they over fill the tank and you are getting pure liquid to the heater..... Sounds like when you use a propane bottle hand torch and tip it up side down the flame turns orange and goes out. Also the regulator vent may have gotten plugged with dirt or ice. May try and bleed some of the propane pressure off of the top of the tank....... But make sure you have it outside and plenty of ventaltion and no open flame any where...... Propane is lighter than air so it settles down on the ground at the lowest point.....hope this helps..... Or you could take it back to your suppler and get a different tank.
