Hi, yes im afraid it is, what the problem is is when you eject the disk the laser rises to its rest position now when you put a disk in the laser is suppose to lower down as the tray closes,but on a few makes of dvd drive the laser stays in the upright position and this is what causing the scratches on your disk.

check if you have any warranty left check the sticker on the back of xbox and if its less than 3 years old and has not be opened by anyone then you are covered even without the receipt of purchase, all you need to do is go onto the official web site and register a repair, they will then come and collect yours and leave you a refurbished one.

now if you have no warranty then you have 2 options 1 get someone else who knows what their doing to replace the dvd drive for you or you try doing it yourself.

if you are doing it yourself you will need to do the following
1 use google and search for free xbox 360 repair guide, hit search and look through the list until you get a decent guide with picures.
2 you will need special tools, a T8 and a T10 star shape socket or screwdrivers
3 you will also need a really thin flat bladed screwdriver to press the clips in the little slots on back of console and you will also need something to poke through the little white holes at either end of the console to release the grey plastic pieces.
4 once you have the tools and got the case off done undo the smaller T8 screws as these hold the xclamps in place so leave these where they are as your not fixing a red ring of death fault so in fact you wont need the T8 bit but its always worth having.
5 you need to then undo the 6 silver T10 screws to release the top case giving you access to the dvd drive.
6 once you have the dvd drive out you need to look what make it is and buy exactly the same one as yours any other make wont work without bricking the xbox and getting banned from xbox live.
7 once you have located the new or working second hand drive (try well known auction site) you need to get your old drive and undo the 4 screws on the bottom then pull the bottom and top cover off the dvd drive.
8 you will now see the control board on the bottom of your dvd drive ( rectangle circuit board with ribbons and wires going to it) once you have found this you need to undo all the ribbons by lifting the clips up and pulling the ribbons out you also need to undo any wires that are clipped to it.
9 on the new dvd drive do the same and remove this control board if it comes with one if it dont come with one then this is not a problem as you will be using yours, you need to then put the circuit board off your drive onto the new drive without doing this and without swapping these board over the new drive wont work, the reason is your dvd drive control board is programmed to only work with your xbox so using a different control board will not work and would do you no good, so after fitting your control board onto the new dvd drive you can then put it all back together and you should have your xbox up and running again

how are you trying to access the internet? are you using a ethernet cable or did you buy the wirless adp.?

Make sure you have your ethernet cable plugged in to your router. Maybe buy a new one just in case this doesnt work.

There is a sensor in the xbox that determines if the xbox is in a horizontal or vertical position. That sensor is probably broken causing the ring of light to go haywire. I am not even sure what you should do first.

Attempt to contact microsoft if you think its that big of a deal.

It depends on the region, if you got it from the UK it will play PAL games, it's American it'll play NTSC game, there are some games though (Ghostbusters comes to my mind) that work on either though.

You have the infamous " Red light of death" this is a hardware failure, and you will need to get a replacement system.
