Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

This means it has encountered a mechanical issue which has resisted the lens moving, you could have dirt in the lens assembly, you can try looking and cleaning it with compressed air and a soft brush otherwise it will require a service.
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:And here's a video summary of the steps:
Yes, the monitor can be replaced. If you're comfortable working with electronics, you can order the part here. If you're not comfortable working with electronics, any good camera repair shop should be able to do it, though of course they will charge you for the labor.
Remember, the A470 is primarily a still camera. The flash is designed to put out a very intense and very brief flash of light for still pictures. It is not intended for video. If you need additional light for video, you'll need a light designed for that. Such a light will consume batteries very quickly, if it isn't plugged in.
If it is on the LCD only and not on the final image when downloaded, it could simply be the camera indicating the actual image area that will be recorded. This can be changed by selecting a different aspect ratio.
Set camera to a slower ISO setting, or make sure the camera is in auto mode. The manual if you do not have one is available here:http://pdisp01.c-wss.com/gdl/WWUFORedirectTarget.do?id=MDMwMDAwMDc1MzAx&cmp=ABR&lang=ENThe relevent information begins about page 81 in the manual, or about page 83 of the PDF.
Check your image size. If your image file size is only about 80KB per image- you have the camera set to take small images. Another factor is the compression ratio/image quality you choose. Your choices are fine and normal. You may have yours set to "Normal"If you are in need of a manual, check Canon's website:http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras
Try setting it to a slower effective ISO rating, this may improve both situations. An ISO of 100 is effectively a slower picture speed, but it increases the pixel density so your pictures should appear better. If you did not get a manual, I do suggest it because there is a great deal that camera can do that is not always apparent from the buttons you see.If you need to download one, http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameraspick your model or family of camera and when that page has loaded you can download a number of documents.
Sometimes a thin a layer of corrosion develops on the contacts or even sometimes on the batteries. When installing them, try to roll them gently back and forth against their contacts to rub through that layer.
