Should a heat pump run all the time?
It really depends on the climate and the design. In Michigan where the winters are cold and the humidity high the air cooled heat pumps run constantly, but here in Arizona they cycle on and off like a regular air conditioner. That's the best answer I can give. Hope this helps and good luck.

Ice on coils of heat pump not cooling
Which coil?, indoor or out? Indoor coils freeze due to clogged filters, low freon, blower motor not working. Outdoor coil freezing could mean, in rare cases in cooling mode, reversing valve not shifting.

Gas emergency heat pump comes on with chemical odor
If the emergency heat doesn't come on very often, it will burn off debris that has collected on the heat exchanger causing the smell. Also, check that there aren't any chemicals that are being stored around the unit that would put out fumes that can be drawn into the system and when heated, cause the odor.
