Hello,Doing a soft reset on the nuvi will usually get the nuvi up and running.If there is a reset button on the bottom, press and hold it until the nuvi powers back on. If it does not have the reset button on the bottom, slide and hold the power switch to the left for at least 10 seconds.Also running the Garmin WebUpdater and reloading the latest update will resolve most issues.Download and Install WebUpdater.

with unit off slide the power switch to the Left as to power unit on BUT HOLD the switch to left about 30-45 sec then you should see the calibration screen. Tap the corresponding taps very lightly and use a pencil eraser to be more precise with your touches.

From the main screen tap Tools>settings>language. Here, under the voice option select a voice you would like to use.

You'll have to take it back to the security location as there is no other solution since you don't have the receipt, or ask the gift giver for the receipt so you can get Garmin to reset the PIN. This is to prevent the GPS being used if it is stolen.

You will have to download the webupdater, from there you will be able to update your device. That should do the job for you.

Going back to the security location will unlock the unit but in order to reset the pin code, the original pin code must be input.
To unlock the unit, it must be sent back to Garmin.

The USB cable will have a regular size USB connection on one end and the other end will have a micro USB connection. There will be a micro USB connector on the back side of the nuvi 255W.
The correct cable to use is Garmin part number 010-10723-01.

Turn unit off then back on

Slide Power Key to the right ( lock )

Hold your finger on the screen for 30 seconds until the calibration screen appears

Is this the USB data cable or is it the vehicle power cable?
Is it possible that you may have the wrong cable for the nuvi 255W?
The proper data cable is Garmin part number 010-10723-01.
The proper vehicle power cable is part number 010-10723-06.

Does the nuvi power on without being connected to the vehicle power cable? If not, first place to look would be to check the vehicle power cable for power being supplied to the nuvi. The led indicator on the power cable that plugs into the vehicle port should be lit up. If it does not light up, the fuse may need to be replaced in the plug.
The power outlet on the vehicle should also be check to be sure that it is supplying power.

You should try to manually delete the maps (after a backup ) on the device , power cycle and retry sending the maps from MapSource or the Software CD from the manufacturer. The map is a single folder onto the device (eg. gmapsupp.img)

Welcome to Fixya. Garmin Nuvi 255W does not need any driver for the computer to detect it. Can you try to connect the Nuvi to a different usb port or try other usb device and see if the computer will be able to detect it so that we can check if this is an issue with usb port of the computer or the garmin nuvi. Please let me know what happen so that we can continue troubleshooting.

connect the 255W to the computer using a USB data cable, go to www.garmin.com and register the device. you will have two choices a one time update for 49.99 or lifetime updates for the device for 89.99 or call support at 1-800-800-1020

G to the place where you set the password....you do not need a password when you are at the location where it was set...then you can turn password off...

Here is just a suggestion , try this and let me know if worked. It needs to be rebooted. Turn off, by holding off button down. Then once it is completely off, then turn it on, BUT when you go to turn it on, keep on button depressed, all the way until it turns on and then some for about 15 seconds, now you just rebooted system.
