if your phone is locked to a particular service provider, it may not be possible. If the phone is unlocked you can do this, but it voids the manufacturers warranty.

The right way to get back your mobile is to report the loss of mobile to your service provider, and approach the CYBER CRIME wing of Police dept in your city. They jave a special cell to recover lost mobiles using IMEI number tracking in co-ordination with all Mobile Service providers. you may have to make few rounds to police station, but its worth as they sure track the mobiles.
