When you scan for channels, make sure you choose "cable" for the setting under the "Antenna" tab.

channel --> antenna --> choose cable

This should let your TV show more channels. Most cable companies issue cable boxes now a days, which you plug into your TV. You usually change the channel by using the remote for the cable box.

The capacitors all looking good on which board? You need to find out when you do not have picture, are you still geting the backlights on, this is important to narrow down the problem. Please read my guides to understand what it takes for the LCD flat panel TV to work, by the way, bad cap can look normal but can have high ESR or low capacitance than the spec.
First, look at the screen in darkened room to see if you can see any slight glow from the screen, if it does, then the problem can be the T-CON (not getting the 12vdc) or the main logic board not feeding the signals to the T-CON board. if not, next place to check will be the power supply module, make sure it has 24vdc which is required by the backlight inverter to work, the reason for not having 24vdc can be from bad DC filter caps (leaking/bulging top, high ESR) or short circuits in the inverter board which will cause the 24vdc supply to go into shutdown mode, so you may have to disconnect the power cable that feed the inverter board to see if the 24vdc will work without the inverter board hookup, you will need to apply about 3~4 amp of load to the 24vdc to make sure it can handle that. There are fuses on the backlight inverter boards also. So there is some troubleshooting you will have to do to find out the causes of the problem you are having. Yes, you would need a dvd player or some sort of additional media player. They have alot of different kinds out now. You can even use your cable box to order movies, or you can even use a device that will stream movies instantly such as netflix.

IF IT IS THE SAME MODEL I AM THINKING OF,YOU CAN GO IN TO YOUR MENU AND IT WILL HAVE 3 DIFFERENT SETTINGS.{1.OFF,2.LIGHT ON WHEN ON STANDBY,OR LIGHT ON WHEN TV IS ON.I HAVE MINE OFF.

All the capacitors will have location numbers printed on the bottom and top of the circuit board next to them like C18 etc--the values of each will be printed on each capacitor--as well as one side of each will have a strip with - which means it is the negative side of the cap and the other side will be the + or positive side--look for ones that are puffed up on top---see attached photo of a new and good cap--the silver top with the creases should be perfectly flat.

Any bad ones should be visible to the naked eye.

Let me know what you find---if you find puffed up ones they will be marked also with a value like 1000 mfd (microfarad) at 10 v (means the cap is rated at 10 volts.)

If you find bad ones it is a good idea to replace with a higher voltage rated cap of the same value--it may present a small problem as the higher the voltage rating is the bigger the part will be.

The reason (if you have puffed up ones) they fail is because too low a voltage rated cap was used when the set was made---saves the company who makes the sets a few cents on each part.

It depends on what outputs your DVD player has and what inputs your TV has.
If your DVD player has HDMI outputs and your TV has a HDMI input then you will need to purchase a HDMI cable and connect the 2.
If either your DVD or TV does not have HDMI then you will need to move on to either a component video cable which has 3 cables on the end which are colored red, blue and green. You will also need to connect for audio which is a cable with 2 colors, red and white.
There are also s-video and the regular old way of connecting which is a 3 cable design which has a yellow end for video and a white and red end for audio.
