"brother mfc 7840w printer goes offline" Problem
The solution, and it took me a long time to find the simple solution, is to right click on your printer, click properties, click the ports tab and click on your Brother printer and click on configure port (or you can delete the existing one and then add another one). What you want to do is update the IP Address. The problem is that the printer does not have a static IP address, it is dynamic. If you want to confirm that, go to your printer and press the reports button and print out the network configuration report. Your IP address will show on that. It's really the last digit in the IP address that changes. This will absolutely solve your problem. Good Luck!

I recently ran out of toner in my cartridge and used a co-workers to print. After I used up the co-workers toner, I put a new one into the machine, but machine keeps saying "Toner life end." I can't get it to print! I've tried putting the cartridge into my co-workers, and it works in her machine. I can't get my machine to work again! What gives?
After I figured this out, it was quite easy to resolve. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum cartridge. Remove the black plastic cover on the left side of the toner cartridge (3 Phillips screws). There is a "flag", which is a small plastic tab on the outer side set to the right at about 2 o'clock. Turn the gears until you fully reset the tab going counterclockwise to the 10 o'clock position (fully to the left). Reinstall the small black cover and the three phillips screws. And the idea to install black electrical tape over the small clear plastic windows on both sides is also a good idea to prevent the early and false message that the cartridge is empty. Make sure you do not allow that tape to get into the gears.

I changed the drum roller and still says Drum error. Is there a way to reset the drum...I have printed a lot of copies but very small amount of actual print.
To reset MFC-7840W drum count use the following steps.
1. open the front cover (leave open).
2. Press clear/back.
3. Then confirm the new drum install by pressing 1.
4. The display will indicate accepted.
5. Then close the front cover.
This should be done each time the drum unit is replaced.

Why does my Brother printer goes into Sleep mode and I can't print??
If NONE of the other solutions worked for you, then you may have a Windows-specific network issue.
Try this: Print to your Brother printer when in Sleep mode. If Printer remains offline, SHUT DOWN the device. Wait a few seconds, then START Windows (not a Restart). If the printer prints your job from the "Welcome" screen, you have the same problem I have - this is a Windows-only problem.
I uninstalled/reinstalled the latest Brother printer driver for Windows 7. This had no effect.
Other observations:
1. All other Mac/Apple devices on my home network print to the Brother when in sleep mode, no problems.
2. My Verizon wireless router is turned off at night, and restarted in the morning. I though this caused a network issue with the printer, but the problem persisted when leaving the router powered on 24/7.
3. Ping test from the Verizon Router Admin account to the Brother printer is successful (remember Mac's work just fine).
4. Ping test from Windows 7 PC to the the Brother Printer is successful.
No Network connectivity issues were detected. Then out of frustration I shut down Windows and walked away. Upon starting windows from a full shutdown (not a restart), the Brother printer woke up and printed all my open print jobs!!
If I find a permanent solution I will post. The only change between working and not working was a Microsoft Windows 7 Update. I will try to update the Brother Firmware to see if this resolves.
