Memory card locked
SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Camera will not download pictures to notebook
Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as
Picasa.

Why the "f" number in manual mode, doesn't go to under the 5.6 ?
f/5.6 is the maximum aperture for the 18-55mm lens zoomed in to 55mm. If you zoom out to 18mm you'll be able to open the aperture to f/3.5.The maximum aperture is a matter of physics. The larger the aperture (smaller f/numbers) the larger the lens has to be. In theory you could make a 55mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/0.5, but it would have to be more than four inches across on the inside. Lens designers have to balance cost and size with performance. If you really need a faster lens you can get
something like this, but it'll cost you a bundle, about six times as much as your 18-55mm.

There is a microswitch under the flash shoe on the left hand side as you look at the cameria. The skid above the microswitch was stuck down. With a mini screwdriver I was able to lift it and fix it.

Canon Rebel camera wideangle lens settings?
That depends on what you're taking a picture of. The best setting for a landscape picture won't necessarily be the best setting for a group portrait. You might want to use different settings for a daytime landscape than for a sunset. That's why the camera offers different settings. The camera is a tool. You're the photographer.

HOW TO TURN ON FLASH
Flash should pop up automatically when you operate camera in easy mode (green square on dial selector) in low light conditions. If using in manual modes press the button on the left side of the lens mount. To fire the flash without taking a picture press the button used to zoom out when viewing pictures. If your flash does not work at all then there is probably a fault with the charging circuit or firing circuit.

You don't need any special software. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as
Picasa.

Canon 40d will not take pictures
1) CF card in camera? Won't shoot without one2) Does mirror go up? 3) Canon had a run of bad motors for this model - if mirror does not go up, then it is the mirror motor. If mirror goes up, shutter will not fire, press release again then the mirror goes down, the shutter motor is bad (same model motor). If mirror goes up, shutter fires, both blades travel together/no exposure, probably the shutter is bad.

Keep getting card full even after formatting new card
Copy any data that is on the card that you do no wish to lose, to computer hard drive. After copying to hard drive, format the card as described on page 40 of the
manual. Always format new cards or old cards after copying pictures to hard drive - before using again in the camera. This assures that the card is completely erased and made ready to be used by the camera as efficiently as possible. Formatting cards in a computer erases them - but is not quite the same as doing it in the camera.Good luck!
