Sharper Image Ionic Breeze GP SI730 Air Purifier - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

I have a sharper image ionic breeze hybrid gp that ran fine for years unitl it recently started sparking / arcing at the base of the grid blades and always in the same spot. I cleaned it several times but the sparking always came back and the unit went into either "drying grid" or "attention required" mode. The solution I found was to stand the removable grid in 2 inches of Pine-Sol cleaner 50/50 diluted with water for 24 hours then brush again with the cleaning brush and hot water. Presto! No more sparking.

It means that the unit needs to be cleaned.

It means that the corona wires require cleaning in order for the ionic filtration to again begin working (it is not filtering when the light is on).

well i had the same problem at one time ..heres what to do... try turning it upside down and bang on the unit gently .not to break it and make sure you did not break the two strings behind the vents.. take out the bulb and clean the whole inside as best as you can.. and if that wont work unplug turn button to on pisitioin and then plug the unit inand hope for the best ... if all else fails go to amazon and replace the unit..hope that helps I’m happy to help further over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/jovani_c02b023fe087f6cd

One person used piano wire, but the diameter must be right so the cleaning beads can slide up and down on the wire when the unit is turned up and down.

Make sure filter is positioned correctly and fully seated.If it does not come on with a clean dry filter it may be a faulty high voltage component.

Clean metal fins and make sure there is no moisture on metal fins....let it air dry after using towels to remove all moisture on fins, then replace into body of ionic breeze.

There have been major problems with these it seems check link above... It looks like it is a makers fault? They have gone bankrupt it appears. There is no fix i seems sorry to say.

What is happening is this: the main electrical component is overheating and forcing the machine to turn off. When it cools, the machine turns back on. Yes, that is actually what is causing the blinking.

There is no solution for this as the main electrical component (a high voltage capacitor in this case) has failed due to stress. In my case, the machine worked for 2 months before failing. The only real solution is to have the unit serviced. However, as there is no service centers, we are all out of luck.

I believe this could be a class action law suit against sharper image for selling units built with components it knew would fail after a short period of time. They had hundreds of reports with this same failure and they knew the cause. Pressing the "boost" button too much causes extreme stress on the capacitor and shortens its life drastically. This capacitor is what provides the power to the ionizing wires.

Hi, actually the broken wire is nichrome and measures approx .00045 inch. Go buy a couple of .09 guitar strings from your local music store and use to replace it.....

The lights are ultraviolet lamps used to kill germs in the airflow. See page 4 and 11 of the manual for some additional details and safety precautions.

If you purchased it before 2008, nobody. Sharper image went bankrupt and was bought by another co who does NOT warranty or repair older products. Below is excerpt from their site:

Funny you should post this when you did as I just finished reassembling my S1730.
Mine was making very loud noise, arcing violently, smoking slightly and would give a good shock when you touched the plastic covers(yes dirty plastic will conduct electric current).

1. Unplug the unit
2. Take the plastic covers off, front has four screws and back has snap at bottom, both slide up when loose.
3. Wash the plastic covers
4. take the light out and clean it with windex
5. Vacuum the inside, be careful of the two corona wires
6. Find the bead on each corona wire and while turning them slight so the edges scrapes the wire, move them back and forth to scrap the white power off the wires
7. scrape the cone shape plastic that the corona wires runs into, this build up is the primary culprit of the arcing which is the noise you hear. be careful of the corona wires again. I used an exacto knife and gently scraped it, sandpaper has been suggested elsewhere, once done scrapping, wipe down to clean any residue. The top cones are only part accessible, after cleaning mine the noise still persisted but acceptably lower than before. I think if you completely take apart the unit you can clean this cones better.
8. Reassembly is the same is opposite of disassembling.

I have replaced those wires with chrome plated wire, stainless steel wires and platinum wires. Nothing lasts very long (weeks to a few months). There are no parts available for these machines as far as I know.

I don't know if you are still trying to repair the air purifier.

About your Ionic breeze purifier, I wanted to report that they are not being manufactured anymore because of heath concerns. New model built from 2008 use a completely different technology. Parts are also not distributed anymore, and the new Sharper Image does not provide any support for the old model.
I suggest replacing the ionic purifier with a different air purifier.

Both Ionic Breeze purifier and replacement parts had been retired from the market because of health concerns related to ionic technology. Parts are sometimes available on ebay, but I suggest not carrying any repair on this unit.
