first make sure the blade guard is correctly tightened. then if that is correct you have a problem with the link bar and the center plate of the guard. they might be worn or not smooth, I generally try to sand both surfaces cleanly and apply a dry lubricant to them to ensure proper movement. If that does not work they would need to be replaced.
I thought I had to
Lay the safety cover on its side with the inside facing up, lay the spring in the housing and you will see a tab for one of the legs of the spring next place the center cover (large flat plate) on top of the spring next comes the center cover (round housing) you have to align it with the posts (one of them is larger, while holding this assembly together lift it up and place the round disc on the outside and insert the screw and tighten. Before reassembling the safety cover move the mechanism to ensure that it operates freely and that it will spring back. For a picture reference of what I explained you can go to "makitausa.com" and type in your model number and it will redirect you to an area for a breakdown and it also contains a section for an operators manual for future reference.
How do I assemble the blade guard for my Makita
lay the spring into the plastic safety cover, you will see a catch for one portion of the spring, the cover plate goes over it and there is a tab on it to catch the loose end and then the center plate which screws on to hold everything in place, check by turning the plate that holds it onto the saw for free movement. You can go to makitausa.com and in the header area on the right type in your model number ls1030n and you can download or look at a breakdown to see what I am talking about. Let me know if you need more assistance, just found your question.
