This all depends on the security options you have setup. Usually google prefers a backup email address and/or a mobile phone number. I believe they have moved on from security questions, just google account recovery gmail, and it will take you to the proper page for account recovery services.

When trying to log into Gmail, you will get the option to reset password. It should say "Forgot Password" above the login line. When you click "Forgot Password" you will need to input the email account you used to open your Gmail account. Log into the other email account and you will have a message from Google with a temporary password. Use that to access your Gmail account and dont forget to change the temporary password to something you will rememberr in your profile.
