I have a Nokon D40 DSLR and a Vivatar Zoom Thyristor 3500 flash that I want to fire off camera to capture high speed photos.I would have the D40 in dark room with shutter in bulb setting. any Ideas

You can either use a PC cord to connect the flash and camera, or you can use a remote trigger to fire the flash cordlessly. Your local camera store should be able to provide options for both.

When I turn it on "this battery cannot be used. Choose battery designated for use in this camera"

It is not the latest camera, so perhaps the battery too is not as fresh anymore. Still, when you really can charge it and you can use it for lots of pictures one time and the next time not, is a bit strange. I would start with cleaning the contacts on the battery and in the camera. Never use anything sharp, or anything with force. Best thing you can use is a piece of dry cloth or cotton swab. All contacts should be clean and shiny. NO oxidation is allowed, no dust in the battery holder. If you have electronic contact cleaner O would try a but on the cloth, but less then a drop. and after that dry and dry it, because it could speed up oxidation in the long run. That is why I normally don't advice this. Then Nikon has a policy, to check in camera if you are using a genuine battery. They must invest to make complete safe batteries, to protect the expensive camera's and dodgy manufactures make batteries, just to sell and don't care if you blow up the battery and camera. So special the modern camera's have detectors to check the battery. I'm not sure they did the same in any update for the D40. When you don't use the camera for a long time, make it a habit to charge the battery every few months.

How to turn on Discovery Mode for Nikon D40 Digital Camera

There is nothing about a "Discovery Mode" in the D40 manual. I am not sure if this will work, but try resetting the camera to its default settings. Push the menu button on the left side of the LCD and scroll down to the pencil symbol. You will find an item on that menu called "Reset". Once you do the reset, see if the "Discovery Mode" is there. Frankly, I think you would be much better off if you read the D40 manual. In case you lost yours, I have attached a link where you can download it in pdf format.

One of the mirrors in my d40 camera is scratchef

Any scratches on any mirrors should NOT show up in the pictures, since there are no mirrors in the light path when taking pictures. The big angled mirror you see when changing lenses flips up out of the way when you take a picture (that's the 'R' in "SLR"). Scratches on it may affect the focusing and exposure metering but will not show up in the pictures.

What do you need? The user manual or the repair manual? I must warn you, if you never have repaired a digital camera before, don't even try to open the camera. You not only need special tools and equipment, you also need special skills for these delicate equipment. The user manual is still online with Nikon USA. The repair manual is about 12 MB, and could be send to a gmail account, because of his size.

Nikon d40 won't power up

The Nikon D40 uses the EN-EL9 7.4 Volt Li-ion Battery. You should be able to read 7.4 V DC between the (+) & (-) terminals of the battery after it has been in the charger for several hours. If it does not, it indicates a bad battery, charger or both. There should over 7.4 V DC on the terminals of the charger if there isn't, it suggests a bad charger. If the battery voltage is OK, make sure it is inserted correctly. If still having trouble, it may be related to the camera power switch or internal circuitry. This will require returning to Nikon for repair. Good luck!

When i connect my nikon d40 to my computer all it

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.
