Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor - Page 5 Questions & Answers
What is a 2001 17.5 Craftsman riding lawnmower worth 42 inch cut?
Condition makes a big difference. Common defects noted when selling a mower are: seat is ripped up; hood is off; needs a deck or drive belt; needs a battery; discharge chutes broken or missing; or the engine smokes when running. If the mower runs (can be jump started) but has some or all the problems it should range in the $150 to $350 price range. If it doesn't run or will need repairs just to get it to mow the $150 is about all you should expect. If the paint is good, stored inside and deck cleaned after uses and doesn't have the problems and is in good shape, a mower of this age can bring $500 to $750. The more problems the lower the asking price should be. Another factor that can determine value is where the mower is at. The price of a mower in California may bring more than one in the mid west - supply and demand.
19.5hp 42" will barely turn over when spark plug is in when I take it out it spins over just fine. What do I look for next?
Have the battery load tested. Autozone like stores do this for free. If the battery passes the load test, then check all of the electrical connections from the battery terminals tomtje starter (including the solenoid). the most likely problem os that you have a voltage drop on the circuit there. Google voltage drop test. If you are certain that your connections are ok, check again. Nothing loose or dirty/corroded/rusted/frayed. If it really is ok then get the started checked at the parts store. It is probably a poor connection somewhere.

Ariens 19.5 hp drive belt slip
Question how old is the mower? Drive belt may need to be replaced due to being streched . Also is the clutch fully engaging , are there any worn pulleys?
Clutch cable spring wearing through then breaking
Use thick bearing grease between the clutch spring and where it is coming in contact with that is causing the spring failure. This should extend your springs life. Check for any alignment issues that would cause the clutch spring to prematurely wear and break. The grease is just a temp. repair to extend spring life. Hope this helps.
Will not move
Make sure that the drive belt that drives the rear transaxle pulley has not fallen off, broke off or is too loose. If the belt fell off, make sure that the guide pins that prevents the belt from falling off is not broken, missing, or bent too far out which will allow the drive belt to come out of track. If you have static drive where the rear transaxle is driven by hydraulic fluid, check for belt operation to make sure belt is in good condition and not too loose. There should be a check port to inspect the level of the hydraulic fluid as well. It's a little tricky to get to but you should be able to manage it. I usually check my Craftsman tractors rear transaxle hydraulic fluid by backing it.............in you case pushing the rear of the tractor up on car ramps and reach up from underneath to check the fluid level. Hope this helps. If you have additional questions, I'll be more than happy to answer. I'll be very busy this week and may not be able to reply until later this week. Good Luck.
