u can run a hot wire strait from coil to + side of ign switch, be sure and put a ballast resister in the wire to keep from burning out coils

Had same kinda thing happen . Was told to try new starter , It worked. Starts good now,

There may be a brace on both sides holding the pan,or the pan needs to be wedged off with a thin screw driver or a scraper.Use the thin edge of a scraper,or screw driver and tap it in with a hammer to cut the gasket loose.

The problem sounds like it is your distributor. Replace the ignition points and condenser, make sure the points are gapped properly. If you still don't get fire at the plugs, change the distributor cap, rotor, and wires. Does it have points?Use a 12V. test light on the dirstibutor terminal to + side of coil. When the test light goes ON,that is the timing at the crackshaft. Just like the old VW.

check your push button starter make sure it is working,or my be the points may be stuck
