computer runs slow

It sounds like you might have some type of virus or other malware.

Here's some things I would recommend to start with:

  1. Install and run a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes, removing any malware items found.
  2. Run a second scan using the ESET online scanner, removing any malware items found
  3. Install and run ccleaner to clean up unneeded temporary files.
If these steps don't resolve the problem, you may want to seek professional help.

computer runs very slow

This depends on which operating system you are running. If you have windows XP, it will be faster than Windows Vista or 7. To speed up your computer, try running CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER This cleans unused files such as temporary files and browser history and cache. You can fully customize what it cleans from the tickboxes on the left. Simply install it, then run and click "Run Cleaner" in the bottom left.
Soluto (http://www.soluto.com/) is a user-friendly program that helps you to tweak what programs run at startup (and in the background) so your computer will run faster.
You should also try defragmenting your hard drive, (Start>All Programs>Acessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter), this may take a long time depending on your hard disk size.

programs are slow and non responsive. windows xp professional version 2002service pack 3

It could be a hardware error either memory or disk. Go to control panel, admistrative tools, events and look at system for disk errors. If you find any, that is a bad sign. Your disk is going bad. Make sure you have all your data backed up as the disk probably needs replaced.

If you didn't find any errors, it could be viruses. Go to TrendMicro.com and run their free virus scan.

Other things that slow down a system is temporary files. Download Ccleaner and delete all temporary files it finds. Also, let it clean the registry.

A badly fragmented disk can also slow down your system. Download Defraggler and defrag the system.
