USB Flash Drive Is Not Showing Full Capacity in Windows

USB flash drive is not showing full capacity

Compared to hard drives, USB flash drives are much inexpensive and widely used in daily work and life, which is the best choice to save important data and program setting on hand. However, it's common to see that someone's USB flash drive is showing less GB in disk space than actual suddenly. For example, a 16 GB or 8 GB USB pen drive became 3GB, 0.99GB, 64MB, 30MB or even 4MB. Let's see why doesn't USB flash drive show right amount of space.

There are several reasons to cause the issue. USB disks infected with malware is one way to reduce the capacity even you have removed the malware. Hidden partitions, overhead formatting and hibernate files may make your USB flash show less capacity as well. Formatted on the USB flash drive on one computer and use it on another computer may lead the wrong display.

It's really annoy that you can't neither use the full capacity of the USB flash drive nor access the data on it. To restore your USB flash drive back to full capacity, you need to format the USB disk firstly. You need to back up all your important data before reformatting the removable disk, because all data will be erased.

how do i remove write protection from my kingston datatraveler G2 2GB? thank you for your assistance

click start control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties then security select take full control in windows 7

USB drives can be write-protected by modifying the StoreageDevicePolicies Registry key and WriteProtect Registry value.
click Start>run>regedit to open Registry Editor. and press control+F to open the find dialogue box and type "usb device" or "driverdesc" to open usb mass storage device or type "usb mass storage device" in the search windows. And right click on it and delete. This will set the policy value to 0. then insert your usb device. It will work fine.
# Remember: do not delete any unknow files in the registry as this will make some programes not work as usual.

also
If you are running a Windows XP OS then you might be able to:

- click start right click on my computer select open
- Right click the icon of your Flash Drive (It should be F:/ or something)
- Click Properties in the menu that comes up
- Click the Sharing tab
- Click permissions
- And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.

hope this helps

My 16GB USB flash drive is completely empty, but its properties indicate that 14.6GB of space are in use and only 319MB are available. It has worked appropriately for a long time until now. I am now unable to put any large files onto the drive. How can this be fixed?

I think it could be due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, thats why user can't see the files and the space available for use is less than the capacity.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and seclect SHOW HIDDEN FILES. It may show the hidden files. Otherwise, if you dont have any vital data on the drive, just format it. Hope this would fix the issue and you would be able to enjoy the full capacity of the disk

Let me know if any further clarification is required. Hope this helps! Dont forget to rate the solution!!

Why can't I use my hard drive anymore? All it's doing is constantly flashing. My comupter doesn't even auto search it anymore. the WD program doesn't show me any details for my hard drive. I was using it one minute and it started going pretty slow then my computer froze, after waiting it no longer recognized my hard drive.

More than likely the hard drive has reached its capacity and will not accept any more data Therefore the hard drive is locked.
Also heat build up in the housing or PC will cause malfunction.
1. check the power supply it may have failed to supply power to the hard drive
2. the hard drive cable could be loose from the board
3.Go "my computer" and select the C drive and right click "properties" to see how much capacity is left. If you see all blue ( Windows XP) or all red ( Windows 7) then the hard drive is full and will not receive any more data.
