Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

How to have a Clean Washer

If you are wondering how to clean the clothes washing machine then here is what you need to know.

Your washing machine works hard at cleaning your clothing, but once in a while you need to give it a good cleaning also. Whether you have a front loading washing machine or a top loading washing machine, you still should take the time to clean it once in awhile.

First take a good household cleaner and wipe down the outsides of your washer. Then wipe down the inside of the lid and on front load washing machine, the rubber just inside the door. To get the rubber clean you may need to move it around, pushing and pulling on the rubber to remove the wrinkles temporarily, to get into them and get the gunk out.
Then you are ready to clean the inside of your washing machine.

Some prefer lemon juice and others white vinegar. Either one is good, but the vinegar may be better at controlling odor in the washing machine. For either one turn the washing machine to the highest load or water setting and fill the machine. Add 2 cups of lemon juice or vinegar to the machine. Run it for a few minutes and then let it sit for at least an hour. Then let the machine finish the cycle. Run another cycle after with 2 cups of bleach. Also let the bleach sit in your washer for at least an hour. The run another complete cycle to rinse out your washing machine thoroughly.

This should give you a clean washer and hopefully you had fun washing the washer.

What lime scale / detergent remover can be used for regular cleaning of my front loader.

Front-loading washing machines are energy efficient and use less detergent than top-loaders, but they sometimes have a tendency to harbor mold and unpleasant smells. By giving your washing machine a quick clean once a month, you'll keep your front-loader fresh, which means cleaner clothes, too. This eco-friendly method doesn't use bleach, costs only pennies to make, and comes together with ingredients you already have on hand.
What You'll Need:
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Scrub sponge
Directions:
  1. Start by mixing together the baking soda and water in a small bowl. This is going to be the "detergent" for cleaning the washing machine. Pour the vinegar into a measuring cup and head over to your washing machine.
  2. Add the baking soda mixture to the detergent container of your machine and pour the vinegar into the drum. Set your washer to normal load at the hottest water setting. Close the door and start the machine, letting it do all the hard work for you. The baking soda and vinegar naturally break up mineral deposits and any mold growth while cleaning and refreshing your washing machine.
  3. Use a clean scrubber to rub around the opening of the washing machine, removing stubborn mold or residue. Wipe clean with fresh water.
  4. Your washing machine is sparkling clean and ready to do a load of laundry! Give your front-loader a cleaning once a month to keep your clothes smelling fresh and your machine working in tip-top condition.
