To get your footage into the computer from DV tape you need a four pin firewire (IEEE1493 or iLink) cable from the camera to a six pin cable into the computer. USB will not do a proper job, it's for downloding photos or as you already mentioned, Web caming.

I want to download film onto my laptop from my Panasonic NV-GS50 and don't have the driver **** to load onto my computer. where can i get the software??

You are in luck! You do not need a driver for this camera to transfer video over the firewire port into your computer. All you need is the appropriate cable and some video editing software. The software can be as simple as Windows Movie Maker (if you are on a PC) or iMovie (if you are on a Mac). Plug your camera into the firewire cable, turn it on and put it in playback mode, then start your video software. Then there should be an option or menu entry labeled "import footage from camera" or "import" or "transfer from camera" or similar, depending on what software you are using.
Good luck and happy video editing!

How do I install the camera without the disc?

You will need a program. Nero makes stuff to do it. Pinnacle does as well. Once you install it, plug your camcorder into the comptuer and turn it on. You will get a window to appear telling you which program you want to run.
