I smell a burning smell from the washing machine--I have the Maytag Neptune which was purchased in 2002. What does this indicate? Can it be repaired and at approximately what cost?

Possible that the element, the valves,the pump or the motor could be the culprit. You must switch off power to the unit , go by the smell to the area or touch the parts to confirm the heating. Once confirmed you can remove and check the part, also check for mechanical friction.

I too have a MAH3000AWW and have discovered a typical problem is that the Door Motor burns out (which is likely the smell). It also usually leads to Q6 and R11 damage on the computer board.

I have purchased parts and got info from York County Appliance Parts and Servicing, 2104 Hoghway 7 Concord (905) 738-4470. Try them.

if you have a maytag neptune washer that ran up until now you got your money's worth,that's the machine that put maytag out of business,if it's smoking and ripping the boot it sounds like the tub bearing is gone and you'll have to replace the washer,if it's load in the spin like marbles are rolling around in it that's the problem,but i wouldn't put a cent into that machine.

YOUR DRIVE BELT MAYBE WORN AND NEED REPLACEMENT.

Shut down and unplug machine a.s.a.p.! It could be your door latch wax motor failing which will burn the R11 (resistor) and Q6 (triac) on the machine control board. You did not mention which Neptune you had... If it is a MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A or a 2000 stacker and you have not replaced the door latch wax motor (12002535) then your time is up. It could be the seal and/or bearings if the machine is starting to get loud in the high speed spin cycle. If so, See www.neptunebearing.com for the seal and bearing kit plus they offer a special Neptune bearing tool for rent called the tony tool. A Maytag technician will want to charge you $900 to replace the whole outer tub? Why replace it when just the bearings and seal kit need changed?

You have to investigate where the burning smell came from. Start at the timer and then check the main board. Also check the drain pump.

check to see if the door boot is intact. if there is a hole in it water could be getting to the motor control board and you are in danger of shorting the machine out. the other possibility is the main computer board may be on its last legs and is doing a slow sizzle
