Sounds as htough there may be thread jammed around the bobbin often caused when the flywheel is turned backwards casuing the thread to reel back intothe bobbin case.

Bobin ran out and when I replaced it the thread from the needle keeps getting in a wad around the bobin holder
Sounds like there are spare thread pieces stuck in the bobbin casing/ hook area. Disassemble (it is usually self-explainitory on most machines), clean it out, then re-thread your machine, being mindful of the tension settings. Does this fix it?

Have you changed the needle? I know that sounds simple, but can cause a lot of trouble if using an old needle. And clean out under the needle plate - this is important. Also try rethreading.
