The compressor tries to start then stops (makes a buzzing like sound) then after 1 to 2 min it tries to again and so on. When it brifely stars I can tell it would continue to cool if it stayed on. Before this happended I did notice when the compressor was running it was a bit louder (buzzing sound).

Thanks I do understand what a capacitor is. I have maintained high end electronic medical equipment for over 25 years. When caps go in AC units do they typically short out or are they open? In my description would thaty be a shorted or open cap and what values range are these caps typically?

Hi

Most likely the compressor may have seized. The reason it buzzes, then stops is that your thermostat calls for air, the motor tries but cannot turn the compressor, the motor heats and the overload protection shuts it down until the motor cools off.

To diagnose, turn off the power to the unit. Let stand overnight (to allow the coolant to completely drain back). See if you can turn the unit by hand. If you can turn it, switch on the power to see if you're back in business. If you can turn it but it won't start, try replacing the capacitor on the motor.

If you can't turn it, then the compressor or a bearing is seized.

Every air conditioner has a motor called a compressor. The compressor provides the cooling capacity for the air conditioner. If the compressor or its electrical controls are defective the compressor may try to start, fail, and create an electrical overload. If the unit does create an overload, every compressor circuit is also equipped with an overload safety switch. The safety switch is designed to protect the compressor from burning out. The safety switch will cut the power to the compressor for a certain length of time and then reset itself. When it resets it will allow the electricity to flow to the compressor once again. If the compressor then starts, the unit should function normally. If the compressor doesn't start when the overload resets, the overload will again cut the electricity to the compressor. This cycle will continue indefinitely. (Always allow three to five minutes before restarting the compressor.) If this situation is occurring, unplug the air conditioner and get help from a qualified repair technician. This problem is often fatal to the air conditioner because the cost of repair often exceeds the price of a new air conditioner.

Hi jts64,

I'd suggest getting the capacitor checked on your air-conditioner. The contact on the compressor will produce chatter if it is not getting power from the capacitor. I'd suggest checking this first before doing anything else. But be aware: If the capacitor is fine, it will still be loaded with power, so avoid touching its contact points.

Kind Regards

Why is my fridge buzzing?

The compressor is trying to start. The overload kicks out and then it takes 10 min or so for it to cool enough to try starting again. It could be a bad start relay or a broken compressor.

Maytag fridge stops cooling, then 1-2 days later restarts on own

The buzzing is typically gonna be the compressor trying to start and failing. Am I right in saying the fridge is at least 12 or more years old?

Maytag used to use a compressor made by Tecumseh and they had a problem with starting. They would buzz and sometimes start back up. Sometimes in a few tries or a few days or never. It would continue to re try every couple minutes and last 5-10 seconds.

I would verify if it is a Tecumseh or an Embraco compressor then make your decision.

A service tech should be able to figure this out pretty easily! Normally what I would do is if I go in and it is running then I would turn it off and back on right away. the fridge will go through its restart sequence and typically make its noises then. Hopefully you are not being charged every time they come out

Compressors are the most expensive repair! and on these I always replace the discharge tube since they tend to rot out from sitting in the drain pan.

Candy fridge freezer

it should come back after about 20 mins only and should cool back after about 10 mins.

i'm afraid the buzzing sound could be coming from your compressor which can not start. the over current relay is tripping off after 20 seconds to prevent the compressor from burning up.
i suggest to unplug the ref, let it cool for 1 day, re plug it after a day and observe the compressor if would run.

if the buzzing sound is still there and the unit is no longer cooling, then the compressor is not running.
check the relay of the compressor. it could just be the relay.

Refridge and freezer stopped cooling

it is either the start switch on the side of the compressor or the compressor itself.
the buzzing sound is the start switch trying to start the compressor and the click is the overload on the start switch kicking it out.
the start switch is bad or the compressor is pulling too much amps = bad compressor.
