The laptop comes on and goes to the point of asking for my protective password, at that point it goes to a dark gray screen with a bold white arrow; in which I can move with the mouse and stays there. I left it on all night and in the morning when moving the mouse the same thing.

If you are using windows xp , you can restart the laptop and press the f8 function key repeatedly until you come to a screen for boot mode selections. use the arrow keys to boot in safe mode. once in safe mode you can go to the controlpanel(user accounts) and delete the user password. then simply restart the laptop to gain acess normally. at this point you will no longer be asked for a password.
Every laptop that is coming to the market has a button the bottom left just next to the "Crtl" button. This button says "Fn". On the other hand please find the buttons that are marked with dark Sun or a white sun. These buttons are for decreasing or increasing brightness. Just press down the "Fn" key (or button) and then press the key with the white sun on it. The brightness of the laptop screen will increase. The keys with sun symbol on it are usually the arrow keys.
If its running on batteries the screen brightness will dim quite a bit. If on AC adapter it should be full brightness, but this is adjustable in either case. With the computer up and running, press and hold down the Fn key and push the up arrow to make it brighter and the down arrow to make it dimer.
no need to go in deep so much while starting up of the laptop, press <Del> key or <F2> to go to setup. select security setup change security setup to other than system and disable/clear passwords if possible, by giving blank passwords

First Run a diags on the dell laptop. You can initiate it by pressing fn+power button together and start the laptop. It will go to the diags screen. Tell me if the diags pass or not and then we will troubleshoot further. Thank you Rakesh Dell Laptop Expert
just use oph crack, use it to find a password/username then go to control panel, classic view in the top left corner, user accounts, "change the way you log on and off" then select the "welcome screen" option. if this happens still, you might be pressing a "lock" buttom to turn your pc off.
