I have a Maytag Atlantis top load machine. It is 7 years old. I have very dark oil dripping from under the machine at the bottom edge of the front. I am assuming the gear box is gone but wanted to confirm that repair would cost as much as replacement. Nothing good to say about Maytag this time. Sure not like the old days. Last Maytag we had lasted for 30 plus years with no service.

Sounds like a hose leak inside the machine. Possibly remover front bottom cover then check all hose connections.

I have an Atlantis myself. There can be several problems. Did you check that the fill hoses in the back are not leaking? Are they tight? There are hoses inside the washer and a pump near the front. I replaced my pump last year and I,m getting ready to replace the thrust bearing assembly (spin issues). Does the washer leak with every load? make sure water is not splashing over the tub when filling. The front panel comes off if you can and leave off and watch to see where water is coming from.

sounds like seal leak in tub water is leaking onto drive unit and washing over it bring and oil it can with it couls be big bucks some parts may be under warranty call service but be sure to get estimate first

clips just under front edge and about 3-4 ins from corners press in with putty knife lift top remove screws on upper edge either inside just below top or along top edge

One of your water solenoid valves are either going bad or stuck open with a little sediment. Find out which is leaking by turning off one of the water lines to the washer. If after it is turned off it still leaks try turning the first water valve back on the turn the other water valve off. This will help you determine which solenoid valve is having the problem. Once identified it is easily replaced.

Check and make sure the seal at the bottom of the washer is not wore out. Alot of times you will get grease from the bearins and drum assembly if this wears out.
