You need to replace the belt needed to spin the drum. It sounds to me like you may have been overloading the drum, putting too much stress on the belt. Over time, it has begun to " burn rubber" as it spins, causing smoke, or worst case scenario, the motor that turns the belt is locking up as the drum spins causing friction on the belt.

It's not the best SM but will get you started. I also have repair post in that sticky to help with the most common issues that I have helped owners with.
