thank you for that info. however I am not very clever with this technology so I would need a step by step process. I have two cables a yellow one and a grey one. at the moment the yellow one is connected from the modem to the computer. the grey one is coming out of the router from the lan 4 port. where does the other end of the grey cable go. and does the yellow cable get connected to the router and if so which port do I put it in. the router has wan and lan 1,2,3,4. then I am not sure what you mean by what else to do. Do I look up something from the lap top.

  • keithreed993 Aug 21, 2011

again thankyou but you haven't answered my question about where the cables go I don't know.

  • keithreed993 Aug 21, 2011

    still can't work it out.

I have connected the yellow from modem to the router lan port and the grey cable from the router lan port to the computer. I have typed in the 192.168.2.1 in to the lap top but nothing happens it just says not connected.

I have also put that same number in to my PC and it doesn't come up with anything either. Where do I type that number.

For that you need to know the password of router. Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. If you are still not able to access router with above ip then you need to RESET it for that press RESET button for 10 seconds it is in back side of router then all settings defaults..Then you can access it with above method. . Then click on wireless->wireless security->WEP security there is code password note down it or enter new password then save setting s and restart router. then you can connect wireless with new password. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

  • If there is modem then connect internet service provider cable to modem .
Then connect lan cable from modem to router lan port then connect lan cable from computer to router;s lan port.
But if there is not any modem then connect direct internet service provider cable to router' wan port. Then connect lan cable from router's to computer.

  • Connect yellow cable from modem to router's lan port and and connect grey cable from router to computer. But make sure the cable from internet service provider connected to modem.
If modem is configured not as bridge then you need to connect yellow cable to router's WAN port.

  • Also make sure your router settings is fine you can configure it with below method.

You can also configure it with below method.

Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link.http://192.168.1.1 orhttp://192.168.0.1 orhttp://192.168.15.1 orhttp://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then click on wireless and enable it.
. Then click on wireless->wireless security->WEP security there is code password note down it or enter new password then save setting s and restart router. then you can connect wireless with new password. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

Having trouble going wireless as soon as i unplug i lose the web

Hi There,
With the limited information I don't think a complete diagnosis and resolution would be possible as there are so many factors involved however I will give you some advice to try.
Because the wireless and cabled connections operate as completely independent entities you shouldn't expect a continuation of service from one to the other, in fact operating in this way causes greater issues than not connecting by cable at all
assuming once connected by cable you have a good internet connection the the problem lies completely with your wireless connectivity between you router and your laptop.
what you should do to diagnose the fail point
1. connect by your cable as you have been doing press start press run type CMD into the box pres [enter] to bring you a DOS screen (black white writing)
in this screen type IPCONFIG press [enter]
the writing that passes by are your IP settings one will be called Ethernet and under which it will have an IP address for your router called DEFAULT GATEWAY make a note of this number. it will probably (though not exclusively) something like 192.168.x.x depends on the make of the router
type IPCONFIG /RELEASE disconnect your cable and reboot your laptop
if your laptop has a switch or button to turn on wireless turn it on once widows has loaded
in your systray (the row on little icons near your clock) you should have something that represents your wireless connectivity, either a strength meter or a computer screen with a plug at the top left corner, click on this and you should see the list of wireless networks available in your area in theory the one closest the top and strongest signal should be your router
if you do not have this then the drivers which make windows recognize your wireless adapter is missing, connect again via wired, search out your laptop, download and install drivers.
if its there click on it and click connect. you should then be prompted for your password (either set by you or written on the bottom of the router "SSID", "WEP" or "WPK" the prompt will tell you which one (of the security measures) and the router will have the password written next to this title.
wait a minute and it should connect and work
if you do not know this and have not set it
connect again using cable after a reboot
launch internet explorer
in the URL bar where it currently says" www.fixya.com/blah blah" type in HTTP://and the number with dots you wrote down earlier so http://192.168.2.1 or whatever it is (probably ending in .1)
this will take you to your routers config screen again it may require a DIFFERENT password if you do not know this check your routers manual, or Google search default passwords for your model of router.
select wireless, select security options, select WPA protection and give it a password that you can easily remember, any device you wish to connect in the future will prompt you for this.
find your rooters save option and also reboot the router, when its back up and running reboot your laptop and repeat the process from switching on your laptop above.
anyway.
hope this helps, took me a while to write it so if it did please give me a good review on www.2pages.freeindex.co.uk

Why i cant get wireless after change my security network?

Hi

i believe that if you have changed your security network
then you have to go to your wireless internet connection down bottom
right hand side of screen

open the connection and go to your new wireless network connection

click on it then go down and click connect

then in a few seconds it will ask for the password that you have put in or it will need the
serial or number that is written on the bottom of the router

good luck
hope you get sorted

I set up a home wi-fi network and have changed lap tops. I don't remember my password. How do I set up a new password. Linksys WRT160N V3

There are several things you can do, both of which require you to plug your laptop into the router directly via Ethernet cable. These instructions are for a majority of Linksys Wireless Routers, but may work on others.
  1. Assuming you have not changed the internal IP address of the router, plug the ethernet cable from the port on your computer to the LAN port on your router (most notably the ones labeled 1-4).
  2. Once you are connected, open a web browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 and press enter.
  3. If your IP address is still default it will ask you for your user name and password. The default is username: admin and password: admin. If the password doesn't work use password as the password.
  4. Once you get "inside" your router go to wireless tab and then to wireless security. There you should see the wireless password in plain text. Copy this down and disconnect from the router.
  5. If you had to disconnect your modem from your router, connect the modem back to the WAN port (not the 1-4) on the back of the router.
  6. Turn on your wi-fi on your laptop and search for your SSID (network name).
  7. Click on the network name and it will prompt you for a password. Use the password that you have written down in the previous steps and you should connect.
If you cannot connect and you are sure you have written down the password and entered it correctly, do a reboot of the modem and router in this order.
  1. Unplug router then unplug modem
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Plug MODEM back in only and wait for all lights to become solid (except the Activity light).
  4. Plug the router back in and wait for all lights to light
  5. Try to connect again.

Good Luck!

Be sure your laptop is on the same network as the router (192.168.1.x) X being different from the routers address. Connect via the Ethernet cable to the routers IP address. Enter the default user/password to configure.

We just added a second laptop to our home network and in setting up the laptop for wireless it asked for a pin number for our linksys wireless router but the pin number is not on the unit and we don't have...

Yes this is very straight forward

open internet explorer on your computer which is connected to wireless router.

browse to your gateway address. The default for linksys is usually http://192.168.1.1

then it will ask for username and password

linksys default username: (leave this blank)
linksys default password: admin

if that doesn't work try username: admin
password: admin

Once logged into console you should be able to see wireless security settings

Click on that and it will take you through to a page with your security settings on there you will see a wireless key or network key or wireless passphrase.

simply make a note of the key as its written. (If the password is masked or *********** out ) which is the case on some of the newer linksys devices you can simply overtype the password with a new one, bear in mind that you will have to then update any clients that normally connect to the wireless network with the new password. So thats all computers, laptops, DS's Wii's Playstations & Xbox's.

******I'd STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT change the wireless password / security key over wireless you should always do it using an RJ45 ETHERNET cable connected to your computer and the router. *********

Thanks

My password is "wrong' whenever I try to connect on my laptop

That's firmware problem on your router. Try to download the latest firmware for you router from www.linksys.com/download then load the latest firmware. After successfully updated the firmware, you need to hard reset the router by pressing the reset button for 20 seconds then unplug the power for 10 seconds and plug it back in. You will need to reconfigure the wireless settings.

I have forgotten the security password that had set for router

First: can you recover the password from your old computer? it may be saved in your browser's password list.
Second: rather than re-configure the router, all you may really need is the WEP key. Do you have that written down somewhere? or retrieve it from the wireless settings in the old laptop?

To default to "new":
The router should have a reset button accessible by way of a small hole and labeled "reset". Unplug power from the router for 30 seconds, and while holding the reset, plug the power back in. This should default, clearing any passwords etc. Important to Note: Lights should blink on the router, be careful not to interrupt power until the router has completed the reboot process. A power interruption may turn it into a brick.
