The solution for me was simple.I removeed the battery, the sim card as suggested but still no joy.So I thought 'this thing thinks I have plugged in the headphones' As I don't have any I took a brush and cleaned the battery, the sim card and the charging port. If in doubt brush every orifice and cleanse it from dust. Check your charger and clean that also. Hey prest, it worked for me!
I have seen this problem numerous times and each time it actually has worked, so just remove the battery from the back and put it in again. Somehow it magically disappears and the phone seems to work again. The battery trick works with a lot of stuff =)
I vacumned out the slot with a shop vac, turned off the phone, sprayed it with electric part cleaner (available at auto parts store), let it dry, turned it on, and the icon is gone.
I had the same problem! It was soooo stupid! No one could help me but I figured it all out on my own. You probably used up all your memory. Try deleting some stuff and it will work again!
I was having the same problem with the headset icon and had to use loudspeaker as my ear set until myfriend who has the same phone figured out how to fix it. It worked for me so maybe if you try it it might work for you... Go to settings than to enhancements.. it will come up as a choice for headse, tty/tdd, charger, and hearing aid... choose headset.... than pick default profile... it will have a list of seven profiles and you pick which one you want ..... if you choose current profile that will keep you in the headset profile... so choose something besides current profile... thats how i fixed mine.... good luck
I stopped at an ATT store, and this was the fix she did:
Settings> Enhancements > Headset > for Default Profile, choose CURRENT PROFILE.
Somehow the phone had jumped to the "outdoor" setting. Not sure why. Hope this helps someone. Lots of the suggestions here are great - I tried them all with no luck. This or another site where someone said their fix was rolling the phone gently down a flight of stairs was hysterical.... made my day (didn't fix my phone though). Thanks to all.

i have the same problem the little headset sign is on my phone and i can't turn it off.
I have the same problem. Without any warning, the headset icon showed up at the very top of the display, and stayed there. The mike and speaker are disabled because the phone thinks there is a headset attached. My temporary fix was to use the hands-free speaker phone option. I switched just by pushing the upper right corner button. On the screen it says "loudsp." in the bottom right corner.
I called Nokia on this and they were baffled, and my cell service provider was clueless and tried everything for 45 minutes while I patiently followed orders. I hope my calls to the provider are free. Nokia said its a warrantee issue and I'll have to return the phone for repair. They also asked if I had tried to use a non-Nokia bluetooth headset. I used the one that my provider bundled with the phone. Seems like brand protectionism to me.
The same problem is happening with my phone and I have tried both suggestions as posted, including removing the battery and replacing it as well as deleting some items and freeing up space and the problem still persists. :(
I have a my touch G4 and it is doing the same thing. What is this?
Same problem here - with a My Touch G4
