Akai PDP4247-L PLASMA main power supply module

My repairman says I need the main power supply unit to fix my no picture problem. I do see 2 red lights next to each other and another red light turn on in the back side. The single red light flashes 8 times and stops over and over...then stops and one of the pair of red lights turns off (inside the back of the tv)

Hi there

If your man thinks the power supply is down, then replacing it should solve the problem. If it does not, then you should not be charged for that repair, and your original power supply refitted. I would at this point go with what he has said, because it is very difficult outside of getting a look at the set to see what has actually happened. The flashing lights mean something by way of a fault code. I will go off and research that for you now.

This guy is a specialist for Akai TV and may be able to do you an exchange board for a lower price. A phone call to him may also be able to confirm your current diagnosis and give you a comparison price for the replacement power supply.

If you are about to attempt a board level repair with this set.... i would strongly advise getting someone with real experience to assist you. The quoted as generic spiel from toddg is for a specific model, of computer monitor... step 16 talks about identifying and replacing 3 capacitors... not sure really which ones are being referred to. Proceed with caution. You are playing with a switch mode power supply that can still have killer voltages (150 volt US 300 volts other countries)) long after the power is off. Just need you to be aware. Being a highly experienced electronics technician myself, I have noticed that novices are the ones to overstate how simple these types of repairs are. They are so often never that easy, that's why the industry pursues the board swap out approach to repairs. If you or your mate do not have any previous experience with lethal voltages and SMPS repair work, I strongly discourage you from attempting this repair work.

Still wondering how much you were quoted for the repair?

Akai PDP4204 has no picture. When its plugged in a flashes 5 red lights. Someone told me its the power supply i have checked some of the things that people say go bad on fix ya. I also was checking the...

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.
  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

I have a pdp4247 plasma i have a 3" white line down the center /w

there are no bulbs in plasma tv's. the problem is most likely a bad video board (what converts the digital input to usable picture for the screen) it will need to be replaced, probably better to get a new tv.

No picture

with most startup issue with this model there usually is a blink code sequence on power led on front of set. regardless of sequence though you would want to isolate problem by disconnecting y main from power supply and check voltages on power supply and if they come up replace the y main and y buffer boards located on left side of tv looking from back and if voltages do not come reconnect y main and disconnect x main and check voltages again and if still not coming up reconnect and verify vs on command on pin 2 of logic interconnect and if 3 volts present replace power supply and if 0 volts present replace ssb

No Picture on PDP4294

Normally the sets have seperate power supplies for the input/main logic board and the HV which drives the panal (could be 2 parts on the same board). It sounds like you have a problem with the power board that drives the panal and HV. Check to see if any fuses are blown, if the fuse is blown, you can try replacing it, but if it continues to pop, then the main fets that drive the HV are shot and will need to be replaced.

No picture ; no sound

the red blinking light usually has a pattern that gives you a code to the possible problem.
Maybe you have a bad power supply board. You have to open the panel and do a few tests on the power supply's outputs to be sure.
It produces a variety of voltages for different parts of the tv ie. the plasma display panel and the audio system. The components supplying power to the audio system may have failed a year ago and recently the pdp.

plasma tv's are expensive to repair, most of the time you can get a better tv for the same price. You can reduce that cost by learning and troubleshooting it yourself.

Akai Plasma TV's screen suddenly went blank -model PDP4294

Same thing for me. TV just turned off one day and won't come back on. LED flashes red. Someone said it's because a cooling fan went out. If I can't find someone to fix it I'll take it apart and tinker myself. 32" with dvd built in was barely over a year old.
