Hi,
The small permanent magnets that start the field producing the electric have gone flat or lost their charge.
To get the generator part working again you will need to "flash" or reintroduce power back into the magnets.

This can be done in many ways... click here for one way

Here is another way to do it...

There are more if you want to google it...

Brila Yamaha generator Smoking, soaking plug and stoping after runing for a few minutes

If the smoke was black, then you're getting far too much fuel. It's probably time for a carburetor rebuild.

Sensor de aceite de un onan cummins rv QG 4000 generator 4000w

If it runs while start button is pressed but stops when you let go?
Check the rotor bruhes, slip rings are clean on the rotor. If you want to get deeper check and ohm the resisitance of the rotor, and stator both for continuity and ground shorts. Check plugs and wiring on control board. Failing that replace control board

Generator dies when i plug anything larger than a drill gun in

It's possible yu have a carb problem. The engine speed control should maintain constant rpm. If you add load and the engine can't get enough fuel, it will stall. If you generator sits quite some time idle add sta-bil to the fuel. Clean fuel bowl, needle valve, metering valve to be sure it receives enough fuel. Since it is runing you migh try some carb cleaner, but usually this doesn't work.

WHEN I START THE GENERATOR I HAVE TO HOLD THE START SWITCH ON TO KEEP THE GENERATOR RUNING.

The switch should be three positional.
The upper position is only for starting. Continuous running is in the middle (self holding) position. Lower position is to stop the generator.
If left in middle position it is not running you may have the switch bad, or the generator is stopped by low oil level.

ONAN GENERATOR STARTS THEN ONLY RUNS WITH CHOKE ON

Hi,
This sounds like a problem with fuel settings or dirt in the jet.
If you can find the carb adjustment screws, with it runing on full choke - screw it in fully untill it stalls, then back out to original position, then restart.
Take off choke and adjust setting untill it runs well when warm with choke fully out.
You can then try and make it run leaner without stalling.

Generator set starts runing for about 1 hr and then shutdown suddenly with speed fault messege dilplayed on the protection board

I work on these every day. Its either gonna be the rotor or stater, the voltage regulator,or its a bad stepper motor which is the throttle motor, or control board. Thats all that could be causing that so its one of those. If its the rotor or stater thats bad it causes the generator to RPM up because it thinks its not producing enough power due to that then it shuts down.
