In searching for an economical method of transferring analog video to digital for the express purpose of later use involving non linear system Real Time editing, a salesman suggested using the Grass Valley ADVC 110. If the system produces 29.97 fps copy it will work but I see nothing in your literature addressing this issue. Can you respond?

SOURCE: Canopus ADVC 110 converter box not working

Plugging in the FireWire backward, especially if it's the 6-pin FireWire, will damage the unit's hardware. You need to contact technical support to arrange for repair.

SOURCE: cant capture video

Not having camcorder control is normal, as the ADVC110 doesn't translate DV (AV/C) control to anything else. It just accepts and replies to deck control commands so the capture application doesn't get stuck waiting for a response.

First off, make sure you only have the ADVC110, your VCR, and your computer connected. No other Firewire devices.

Be sure your have the output from your VCR connected to the ADVC's input. Connect your VCR's output to your TV. You should see in iMovie the same image you see on your TV, slightly delayed.

SOURCE: Can't capture just audio with no video

Capture it as a standard video clip (with audio), then export the audio track out of Final Cut. If you export as 48 KHz, 16-bit stereo, then there should be no loss in quality as the output is the same as the captured input.

Changing analog to digital on Sharp TV

Unfortunately, you cannot convert an analog TV to digital simply by changing settings. The transition from analog to digital involves hardware changes. If you have an older Sharp TV without a built-in digital tuner, you may need an external digital converter box or consider upgrading to a newer TV with a built-in digital tuner to receive digital broadcasts.

My father in law gave me a technics sl 1360 turntable he bought in japan in the 60's or 70's. It was boxed up for decades. It cant hold a constant speed. it ebs up and down. any thoughts?

If you can actually hear a change in musical pitch as the speed goes up and down, it's possible it needs to be lubricated. Technics used to sell a silicon oil for this purpose, but no longer. You'll find suggestions for a substitute with a Google search. If you can't hear a change in pitch, but can see the speed variance on the markings around the platter, don't worry. This is normal behavior. What you're seeing is an infinitesimally small amount of change. My Technics 1300 has always done this, especially until it's been running for 10 to 15 minutes. It will even vary between the outer and inner grooves. It's an analog control system and not as "locked-down" as the later digital units, but it's far better than any other non-digital design.

How can I transfer my 8mm tape to my computer? I need to have the film on a flash drive or dvd.

Assuming that you want to do your video work later (editing,DVD burning)in your PC.

1.Your PC must have video capture device(either built-in or add-on).
2.Properly set your video editing software to able to capture video form your device.
3.Connect your camera to your PC in regular manner, like when you connect it to your TV.
4.Have your camera in PLAYBACK mode.wind the tape to the beginning of the footage you want to capture.
5.Open your editing software.turn on capture mode.
6.Start capture. At the same time, start playing back the footage on the cam.
7.When all footage were captured, click stop capture.
8.Start your editing work.
9.when complete, save it to some uncompressed video format like *.avi for later burning to DVD or converting to other format.

For beginners,I recommend Windows Movie Maker video editing software that should come bundled in almost every computer. It's fast, simple but effective enough for home-movie work.Once your project is completed, save your movie in original .avi format for later burning to DVD,etc.

BTW forget the old-school Linear Editing (on the tape) thing. It's slow, complicate and much less flexible than Non-Linear method.

How do i transfer canon hf20 files to iMac with usb cable? Only the Digital Video Solution Disk has "for Macintosh" on it. All the File Transfer disks say windows and will not load on my iMac

You need an editing program, and then you will transfer the files from within the program ...

This camera stores the video using a unique method, and does not allow you to simply drag and drop the video files - you also can not easily find the camera and play the video real time to transfer it ...
You need a compatible software program, meaning the software needs to be compatible with the camera ... there are many available ... but if you are looking to buy software check to see if it is compatible with your camera before purchasing ... I wonder, what software will you be using to edit the video?
For example, you can use Final Cut Express. It will find the camera as long as the camera is connected via USB and there is power applied to the camera ... once connected, look at the camera LCD screen and select "Computer" for the connection ... then, in Final Cut Express, select Log and Transfer (File menu), and you will get a new window. You camera should be recognized and you can select the video takes that you want to transfer and then hit "add selection to queue" and the transfer will begin.
You will first want to check in Final Cut Express where the transfers will end up on the computer, and pick a suitable location with plenty of hard drive space (Final Cut Express menu / System Settings / Scratch Disks) so you can find them if you want to at some point in the future.

Assuming you will be editing in Final Cut Express, you won't actually need to find them, but its important to select a scratch disk location that has plenty of hard drive space, and if you want to copy one of the clips to use it directly to just upload to YouTube or something like that, you'll know where they are (they will be .mov files, and can play all by themselves using Quicktime or any similar program)

As always, refer to the manual if you run into any problems ...
Hope this helps!

How 2 get Sony DV taped content to mpg/wmv on laptop w/USB

The movie software that came with it should be capable. did not see which format or whether Standard def or a newer high def model; I believe the older std def are relatively uncompressed as apposed to the DVD and Hard Drive models which are mpeg-2.
...if w/o the original movie software, possibly can download from sony.
..With a NLE (non linear editor) such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Express/Pro, ..or if you want go Sony there is now Vegas which should surely accept any sony format.........then the junior models or iMovie that comes with a Mac.
...Since it is digital already, you should not need to worry about a capture card and analog to digital conversion....should be able to be directly digested by the NLE or movie software.

Six years ago, I purchased my Sony Handycam CCD_TRV308 Hi-8. Now I want to download some old videos. Will this cam corder allow me to transfer videos to my computer?

You likely need a video capture card that will accept analog video (several makers like Pinnacle--not a recommend);
...alternatively, if you have a digital video camera, better ones have an analog video input jack by which you can use the digital camcorder as an interface (with analog to digital conversion), and thence to the computer via the firewire cable.
...This technique can also be used to transfer VHS from your old VHS player from its analog output, via the digital camcorder to the PC.
..This way you can transfer into a NLE (non-linear editor) like Adobe Premier, Final Cut, Sony Vegas, AVID, etc ; and edit your video now that it has been digitized. And the Hi8 as you know will have much better resolution potential than the VHS.

    Camcorder video transfer formats

The IEEE 1374 is the way to go. It is fast, and it is digital. Therefore, the video and audio will not be degraded in the transfer. The others are analog interfaces.
