You did not mention what you are connecting with HDMI but I have had problems with my PS3 and it is copy protection related. On a PS3, you have to connect it to HDMI1 otherwise some BlurRay movies will not play.
You might have a bad HDMI cable. I have heard the quality of cable does not matter these days but I still have had issues with the really cheap cables. I still do not buy the really expensive HDMI cables though.
Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.
