DV6000 no OS stated, why post lacking such a KEY FACT?
surely not XP, say it's not so.... (we beg and get zero here)
the PC is 11 years old, now, so my guess xp or vista.
W7 if super lucky and smart. w7 has SUPPORT , see?)
it takes these things for that to work (at the least)
1: the hDD must be good, did you do hdd tests first?
you can not install load the OS on bad HDD. sorry.
2: the HDD recovery partition must be good for that to work,
means still like it was day 1 new, not deleted, in 11 long years.
3: the coin cell in the PC RTC coin battery must be good.
(page 131 in the pdf below) it hides under the DRAM stick.
an d 11 year old batteries are no good. (if time and date in bios are wrong this battery is bad, i'd not ever run one this old.
If you ignore it the BIOS goes nuts. (not fun ever)
It's a first things first on OLD PCs like this, oK?
4: the huge main battery must be good (it's not 11 years old) or take it out leave it out, until the OS is loaded ok(pretend it's a desktop) ( the only easy step is here, just do it)
ok)
HP history and I am reading your service manual now for you at HP.
the magic recovery key began I think in 2006 ! bingo you.
before 2006 only that CD from HP works (HP recovery CDROM)
first HP laptops had:
the F10 key recovery partition (not yours, F10 is bios main yours)
Next (yours)
then F11 key recovery partition.(bingo you have this !!)
So you power on, and hammer the F11 (bam recovery mode)
it then goes back to DAY 1 just like Dorothy in Wizard of OZ (end)
all data you created is GONE, (are you backed up? yet?)
if not say so and ask HOW to,or google that 1million hits there.
lets play game 2, (me blind) if the PC was say vista
and back in 2010 you upgraded windows 7?????
and the F11 partitions is VISTA, that means Vista is now lost.
so history maters here, what Windows is there now and what did you have , day 1 new,, all unstated
(i cant look under your hood)
The CDROM set, you never disclosed what it say on the label
XP, Vista , W7 (?) and the number of disks
disk 1 or 3? and disk 2 and 3 missing, (details matter)
So before hammering the F11 key, ask your sell
what OS is there now, and what was there day 1.
then ask as gill bates said," where do you want to go today"?
back to XP ,back to Vista or back to the future (m. fox)
only you know this, (history of pc matters)
"if was mine, to W7 no matter the cost" but that's me.
I run OS that has support in 2018 up.
HP ended support the DV6000 pages are retired,
some pages linger, (not deleted yet)
the service manual is there. (hint get it while still there)

Ponderments.: (econ 101)
this PC is known to have the LCD back lamps go bad.
CCFL dead is normal on this PC. !! yes !
most are now this old, (dim, yellow, dead, blinks, or intermittent)
i say that because fixing old PC can get expensive.
if the HDD is bad, are you going to buy a new screen next>?
HDD 101:
last how to test the hdd.? (2 tests)
the above manual , page 42 (pdf page #)
see that page, see hdd test there,? yes.
do that first (it's not comprehensive it's a toy like test but if fails bingo for bad hdd.) "BIOS hdd test rudimentary"
the best test is using (dead OS) is to use a linux boot disk (CD)
then click disktest and run the tests, seen below)
and make sure smart C6 is not bad.
I have not seen many 11 old weak Laptop HDD be good.
they are weak cheap drives. (5 year life is common)
not 10.(there are better drives for SURE)
facts on HDD. (see the nice example of bad hdd there)
http://www.pcdied.com/brick-dead.html
now the best test (using Ubuntu demo mode (boot the cd , click TRY ME. (cost is 1 blank disk or blank USB flash mem stick)
Yes built media on a good PC , how else.?
http://www.pcdied.com/linux.html
last , 11 year old CD/dVD rom drives tend to be bad now.
so only use USB boot media, that will WORK.
if h3ll bent on using the DVD drive, blow it out first with dry air in can, so it might work for sure optics in side not packed in filth.
the above covers all ways to recover, and pitfalls, common.
(not one word on home made recovery disks, I never go there,
they love to fail)
hope that helps, in some small way.
Hello Humanold,
Please check the following recovery steps:
Full recovery by using recovery partition:
1. Reboot the notebook PC.
2. Keep tapping F11 when the Compaq logo displays.
3. When the Recovery Manager appears, click Next.
4. When prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore program, select No and click Next.
5. When prompted to use the System Recovery, select Yes and click Next.
6. Select the option to perform the recovery without backing up files and click Next.
7. Upon completion of the process, recovery will display "The PC Recovery was successfully completed".
The recovery process will return your PC to the factory image.
Full recovery by using recovery disks:
1. Open the disc drive door and turn off the PC.
2. Insert the first Recovery disc in the disc drive and close the door.
3. Press the power button to turn on the PC.
4. The HP Recovery Manager window appears during the boot process.
If the HP Recovery Manager can access the hard drive, a prompt is displayed to backup the user files before continuing the recovery.
If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, the HP Recovery Manager will overwrite all the data and reconfigure the entire hard drive to its original condition.
5. Follow the prompts to insert any additional recovery discs in the disc drive.

my v pus zen is stuck in recovery mode
Hi Humanoid. I know this is quite old, but I want to provide a possible solution for anyone else who may come across this problem. You may have to wait anywhere between 1-14 hours for it to finish this part of the recovery. Mine hung at 99% for several hours, then finally finished that part. There is another 3-6 hours of software installs after that, so be prepared.
