I have always gotten great pictures for Football games and movies where the picture is very bright, but for dark movies, like The Godfather, there is a shadow and blurring effect. I have and HD reciever and am using HDMI connectivity. The same effect happens when watching TV or DVD's, Live or DVR. It's almost as if the TV has an easier time distinguishing shades of color than shades of black.

You may have a lamp going bad,when was the last time you replaced it? Or the DMD or light engine, try lamp first. Good Luck, big IRISH.

If you are getting the same problem with both TV monitors it could then be assumed it's an input problem to the TV monitor. If you are using a digital output from your receiver it could be the cabling. If you are using an analog output from your receiver it is probably coming from the receiver.
Digital video processing does have issues with darker scenes.
Can you try another video source seperate from the receiver like a DVD or better yet an analog VHS, if you still have one. Good luck and let me know.

It's been this way since it was new. It has something to do with interpreting darkness, blacks and greys. The picture is absolutely perfect when watching something well lit, like a football game. The problem only occurs when watching a show that is darkly lit where there are shadows.
That's just it, they are not well defined, which produces a shadowing effect. It's like the opposite of 3D, where defined blacks in the background make the foreground stand out. This shadowing effect makes the background bleed into the foreground, or the foreground bleed into the background, whichever would be the correct discription. In either case, you cannot distinguish well between the foreground and the background.
It's not the lamp because the picture on a well lit program is astonishingly beautiful, and vivid. There is either a simple way of adjusting blacks that I'm unaware of, or it may be a manufacturing defect that they did not account for and unadjustable.
