Ati2mtag causing crash - ATI vid card

I have an ATI radeon 9800xt AGP 256 video card *the listed is the closest one i could find* . Ever since i upgraded with Catalyst, the video card causes my PC to crash when I play games. In the event log, i get spammed with ati2mtag errors which seems to coincide with the crashing. I have since reinstalled my driver, deleted and reinstalled World of Warcraft, and even reformatted my Pc to fix the problem. Nothing so far as worked. The crashes cause my pc to lock up and the more I play, the more frequent I crash. All of my searching indicates it's my video card causing the crashes. Is there anything I can do to fix it short of buying a new Nvidia card? Please help =/ Same crash/reboot after installing latest drivers to play SPORE.

Thanks - it turned out to be the Catalyst Driver. Tried versions 8.8 (most recent), 8.7 and 8.6. Finally went to their oldest driver still available on the website (7.7) and I've been happily sporing along since.

Ati2mtag causing crash - ATI vid card

This error normally occurs if the card becomes unstable due to overclocking, heat or is faulty. The fact that the more you play the more it crashes lends credence to this being an overheating issue with the gpu. The options to resolve this are to make sure the gpu fan is functioning probably on the graphics boards and replace if necessary. While doing that I would look at the cooling setup for the entire system to make sure their are adaquate front, rear and if possible side fans to circulate air properly. Obviously the more a gpu overheats the more it's life cycle is shortened. You may want to take the second option of replacing the card.

Swap 9800 Pro for 9700 Pro

You must uninstall the current driver and reinstall the driver for the 9800 Pro first:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
Power supply recommended is 300watt for each, so that is not a factor. It would have to be a driver conflict.
