First, check to make sure you're not in the macro mode. There's a slide switch on the end of the camera, near the SD card slot. Slide the switch away from the flower toward the mountain to take it out of macro mode. The flash won't fire in macro mode.
Then, if the flash still doesn't fire, take a look at the flash mode. Press the up-arrow button to bring up the flash menu. If it's currently set in the lightning-bolt-in-a-circle-with-a-slash-through-it symbol, you've got the flash turned off. Set it to the lightning-bolt-and-"A" for automatic flash or the lightning-bolt for forced flash.
If the flash still doesn't fire, then it's broken.
On the menu there should be an icon that looks like a yellow lightning
bolt with a red circle around it and a red line thru it (this means that
the flash is off)....in the lower right hand corner you should see a
white lightning bolt. Tap the red circle 2 times and you should notice
that the yellow lightning bolt now stands alone and the red circle and
the red line has been removed (now your flash is on). Note: Each time
you turn on the camera and you need flash, you will have to make this
adjustment...I hadn't figured out a way so that it happens
automatically..
Press right on the cursor pad (marked with a lightning bolt symbol). Use the cursor pad to select Flash Off (lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it) and press OK/FUNC.
Don't forget to change it back when you need it again.
The lightning bolt is the fill-flash symbol. Red-eye reduction is the eyeball symbol. Flash off is the lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it. There's also an auto flash mode, represented by a lightning bolt with the letter "A".
Repeatedly press the flash button on the top of the camera to cycle through the flash modes.
Press the flash button (marked with a lightning bolt symbol, next to the on/off button) repeatedly to cycle through the different flash modes. The four available modes are Auto (lightning bolt and letter "A"), which flashes when needed; Fill (lightning bolt), which always flashes to fill in shadows, Redeye (eye), which flashes once to dilate the subject's pupils then flashes again to take the picture, and Off (lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it), which never flashes.
Touch the lightning bolt icon in the function area until the flash icon and the letter A appears on the left side of the display. This activates the automatic flash.
Touch the lightning bolt icon again until the letter A disappears. This forces the manual flash mode.
Touch the lightning bolt icon again until the eyeball appears on the left side of the display. This activates the red-eye reduction feature.
To turn off the flash function touch the lightning bolt icon repeatedly until the no-flash symbol (lighting bolt in a circle with a line through it) appears on the left.
Touch the lightning bolt icon area until the flash icon appears on the left side of the display. This will activate the flash.
Touch the lightning bolt icon area again until the flash symbol appears on the LCD screen. This forces the flash function.
Touch the lightning bolt icon area again until the eyeball icon appears on the left. This activates the red-eye reduction mode.
To turn off the flash, touch the lightning bolt icon area again until the no-flash icon (lightning bolt inside a circle) appears on the left.
This is covered on pages 13-14 of the manual. If you've misplaced your manual, you can download one from the manufacturer's web site at http://vivitar.com

On the control button (large button on the back) at the top is a symbol that looks like a lightning bolt with an arrow tip. This is also the UP arrow. When you press it continually, the flash options will be noted by symbols.
No indicator - Auto
Lightning bolt - Flash forced on
Lightning bolt followed by SL - Slow Synchronized flash
Lightning bolt with the circle and line through it - Flash Forced off
There should be a symbol on your camera that looks like a lightning bolt in one of the displays. Simply choose that option until you get an option with a circle with a slash through the lightning bolt. This is the flash off setting.
