The backlight on my Samsung Intensity no longer goes off. I have changed it to 7 seconds, but it remains on and will drain the battery. Could it be a battery problem? The phone is just over a year old, so I'm not sure if the battery needs to be replaced

My daughters did the same thing. One of the side buttons what stuck down, so check all your buttons.

Thank you for posting that! I went a few steps further with my wife's phone (after changing various settings): 1) We took the snap-on cover off and 2) pushed every button (with the power off) to make sure it popped back out. We even did the slide-out keyboard. And now it seems normal again.

I had foolishly put my phone in my back pocket, not realizing that my nonexistent rear would dislodge the slide mechanism when sat on, which resulted in it staying in the 'ON' mode. I slid it open and noticed immediately that it was really stiff. Opened and closed it a few more times and PRESTO! Works fine now. Give it a shot. It couldn't hurt.
