Kenmore refrigerator model 7727790 it is leaking from freezer alll over the fridge and we have taken apart and defrosted coils and drain it lasted about 2 weeks and started leaking again

check for ice buildup in the freezer floor,if so then the drain hole for the defrost pan is plugged up and when it defrosts the water from this leaks down into the refrige,you need to remove rear inner wall panel inside freezer and take a small wire and rat out the drain hole under the evaporator coil that goes to the bottom of the unit

Hello,

If water leaks inside your refrigerator
(and it WILL, at some point) you can fix
it yourself.

In the good old models, one had to defrost the
fridge every few months manually.

In the recent models, the fridge defrosts automatically,
once or twice a day, and the water is supposed to drain
down a long drain tube into a pan located at the bottom of
the fridge. This collected water in the pan evaporates
by the heat under the fridge.

Now the drain tube can get clogged, by food debris and/or
ice. Thus when the water cannot drip through the drain tube
the water drips inside the fridge.

The drain tube is located behind the fridge, which is pretty
easy to take it out and clean. However usually the clog is
not in the long tube but in the connector assembly located
in the backside of the fridge that leads to the long drain tube.

To get to the connector assemble, you need to unscrew and
take out the back panel of the freezer compartment. You would
see the evaporator coil and a tray under the coil where the water
is supposed to drip through. If you find the tray completely frozen
with ice, let it melt off. To speed up melting, you may blow
hot air via a hair dryer. Once the ice is clear, you should see
a drain hole in the middle of the tray. This could be clogged,
which needs to be unclogged.

Next unscrew and open the thermostat control assembly located
in the inside of the back of the refrigerator compartment just above
the light bulb fixture. Once you take the take the cover off (you will
also have to take the knobs out) you will see a small tray cup about
2" x 2" x 1/2" into which water from the top freezer compartment
drain hole is supposed to drain. Pull out the tray cup, and if clogged,
unclog it, clean it and put it back.

To check if the drain works ok, pour some water on the tray
under the evaporator coil (top freezer compartment) and see if it
immediately drains into the tray located at the bottom of the fridge
at the floor level. If it does, you got it; and you can assemble things
back in the reverse order you took the pieces apart.

Needless to say, use a vacuum cleaner with a long suction tube to clean
out all the collected mess under the fridge. No matter how good
your housekeeping is, the bottom of the fridge will be full of dust.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge.The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.


Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

The drip pan is underneath on the floor. You don't really need to see it. Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

The answer to finding the cause of the leak is where we need to begin. Most start in the freezer section behind the rear panel where the defrost condensate is drained during defrost. Sometimes the drain hole freezes over and the water drains down into the freezer creating a large area of frozen water. Other times i happens as the water leaves the drain in the freezer and follows its path to the pan below your refrigerator to re evaporate into the air inside your home. If leaking inside the fresh food compartment then the cup behind the control panel may be over flowing and leaking down the back wall of the refrigerator and will need to be taken apart and cleaned to allow the water to continue down to the pan below the refrigerator. My refrigerator is leaking water inside the fridge:

Most times this is a plugged defrost drain system. The defrost heater in the freezer section melts the frost and changes it to water, this water is suppose to flow down a drain system. If this drain system is restricted or plugged the water will leak inside the refrigerator. The drain system starts in the freezer section with a tray built under the evaporator coil. The water is funneled through a small hose into a cup in the top middle of the fresh food section ( not on all models, but this is the most common way ), from there, the water is directed out the back wall to a drain hose that runs down the back of the refrigerator into a condensing tray. The heat created under the fridge makes the water evaporate and disappear. Some of the cups ( in the top back of the fresh food section ) can be removed for cleaning. A turkey baster can be used to help clean out the drain system. Fill the baster with hot water and "blast" it into the drain hose to help flush it out. A piece of wire or pipe cleaner can also be pushed into the drain hoses to help clean then out. On a S x S style of fridge the drain system is in the bottom back of the freezer section and often you will have to remove the evaporator cover to access the drain hole. You can clean this out in the same manner as previously mentioned, but because of the water leaking into the freezer instead of the fresh food section you will have to remove the ice build up to clean out the drain system. For some reason Whirlpool has found a need to "hide" the drain hose inside the walls now ( Whirlpool makes many of the Kenmore branded refrigerators ) on there top freezer refrigerators. This makes accessing the drain hose to flush it out more difficult, no cup inside the fresh food section, no hose down the outside back wall and the only access is inside the freezer section behind the back false wall and under the evaporator coils.

its possible that the drain pan behind the back freezer wall is clogged or coverd with ice, sounds like when unit goes into defrost melt water leaks under sides of drain pan and into fridge. unplug and remove back freezer wall if drain is covered with ice defrost the ice, can be prevented by loosely coiling a piece of solid copper wire around element and into drain slightly radiant heat during defrost should keep drain fromicing over. if drain is just clogged wth debris clean drain and you should be good to go, hope this helps you.

IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE A CLOGGED DRAIN . CHECK YOUR CONDECER COILS BEHIND KICK PLATE .. AFTER THAT YOU CAN UNPLUG FRIDGE FOR 24 HRS WITH DOORS OPEN AND SOULD DEFROST ENOUGH TO CLEAR DRAIN . IF NOT . DEPENDING ON MODEL YOU SOULD BE ABLE TO GET THROUGH DRAIN THROUGH MOST FREEZERS .
