You need video capture software compatible with your operating system on the computer and you need a IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) cable. Amazon.com has these cables online. Your camcorder may have included a CD with software for downloading videos or you can buy online (Pinnacle for example) Your computer has to have a firewire input. So there are several things to get setup.
You would get a USB cable (typically comes with your camcorder) or a firewire cable (Sony calls i.Link) but you need a lot more than a cable. Software on the computer is most important. Sony usually gives you a CD with the software you need to load videos from camcorder to computer. There are other solutions, particularly if you only want to create a DVD of your videos.
The USB connection will only download still images from the camcorder. You need a firewire cable and card in your computer to download video. If your computer has a firewire port already, you just need the cable. Hope this helps =]
You can download video to your computer using the included USB cable. However, your camera will first need to be on AC power to make the transfer, so take the battery out and hook up the AC power cable to the adapter to the DC power cable to the camera, then turn it on. You can now transfer videos to your computer using the camera's interface, once the USB connection is made.
Since you are using a USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer, it is required to install the USB Driver and the supplied Software to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer.
The required USB Driver and the ImageMixer Software have to installed from the supplied Software CD.
The detailed information to install the USB Driver and the ImagerMixer Software from the supplied CD is mentioned on the page # 153 to 157.

You can also transfer the videos to the Computer using an i.LINK cable. The i.LINK cable is better than the USB as the former transfers the videos digitally and the latter in analog form. Hence, the video quality is good for the videos transferred using i.LINK. You will not need any supplied Software to do this. You need only the i.LINK cable and the video capture Software like Windows Movie Maker(Pre-installed) in Windows Xp Computer.

The USB cable is to download still images only. To download video, you need (1) a firewire cable, (2) a firewire port on the computer, and (3) a video editing software program used to download and edit the video.
If you're using a Windows Vista Operating System it'snot possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB connection. The videos from the tape camcorders cannot be transferred to Windows Vista Operating System as there is no USB Streaming ooption available on the Windows Vista Operating System. The Camcorder uses the USB Streaming function to transfer the videos to the Computer. You may wish to purchase a i.LINK/Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer in order to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer. or There is an update for driver on the Sony website to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB cable. http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=DCR-HC42E&f=usbdrven_vista
You may also try installing the driver update for the Camcorder. The i.LINK cable gives a better video transfer qulaity than the USB transfer. The i.LINK cable used to connect the Camcorder to the computer depends on the number of pins available on the i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on the Computer. The i.LINK port on the Computer is a D shaped port which is labelled as i, DV, IEEE1394 and Firewire.
I have a zr300. You need a firewire connection and a firewire cable to download the contents of your minidv tape for burning. You can not do that with a usb cable. USB cable can only download photos and videos from your memory card not from the tape.
Connect it to your computer with a supplied USB or Firewire cable and use the software supplied on CD with the Digital Camcorder.
If you have a Firewire cable, but nowhere to put it, you'll need a Firewire card or a Firewire adaptor, which can be bought from most computer retailers.
