I have the large grey square blocking the actual television picture also. It covers most but not all of the screen directly in the center. It goes away if I change channels or go to menu but comes back approximately 5 seconds each time. HELP!!!!!

whats the model number of the tv? What happens if you press the menu option either on the remote or tv? if its LCD -Without opening the tv and t-shooting it sounds like either the tcon or audio video board.

Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning. The black square is a box for the text.

Look for the closed captioning (CC) menu in the set up and turn CC off.

That may be that one of the closed captioning modes has been enabled. One of the closed caption modes or text modes does the box in the centre of the screen. Make sure that the CC on the TV and cable box is not on.

Most likely it's the closed captioning has been turned on. From your post I assume you have the remote control and able to access the menus so try to turn off the closed captioning. I'll be notified if you post something new.

get your remote and press menu and look for close caption. Turn off clase caption and this will go away. If you need close caption , set it to CC1

hmmm...the black square syndrome..sounds like the picture in picture settings are unhappy..check those, to see if maybe it's on some sort of timer, and accessing a non channel(which might explain the black square).

go to main menue,then go to captone menu, make selection captone off. black sqvare is supposed to be off.

I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
