The TV is a plasma screen. There are several circuit boards that will go bad over time that affects the picture quality. TV Parts Universal TV Stands DLP Chips ShopJimmy You can get the parts here and replace those boards yourself.
This is almost certainly the device that sends electricity to the the plasma in the panel after failing. Bring to your local repair shop and expect to pay 300-400 parts and 100-200 labour.
open the back of the set and inspect the power supply board -- there should be two fuses on the board- they cost around 2 dollars at radio shack -- check all connections for wear or damage -- there are two boards in most televisions -- a power supply board and a audio / digital board -- one is probably board
Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.
