My whirlpool will not spin

My whirlpool ultimate care heavy duty super capacity plus will not spin. Makes a light grinding noise. How do I get to the coupling to check it out and do I need to remove the motor and how to?

  • Connie Strange Sep 21, 2008

I think you are responding to a different model than my whirlpool asked about above. My model # is LSQ9244EQO and it has 3 1/2 inch bolts holding the motor up, yet unscrewing those does not detach the motor. I have not detached the pump as you described above, Should I? My problem remains how do I detach the motor to get to the coupler. The description above still does not tell me how to diagnose if the coupler is bad, your answer assumes it is and consequently tell me to remove and replace. Looking forward toyour responce and thank you for your help. Khankent

My washer is doing the same thing and it is making the grinding noise...I did take the top off and a thin rubber belt if broke from the thing where you add fabric softner...it's hard to believe that little thing could cause this. I will be out 100.00 for a used one and afraid the new ones will be junk because they don't make them as good as they use to. PLEASE HELP ASAP fixing it other than than belt...could be more than I can do...if it's not something I can do myself...I mine as well buy a another one because the service charges are way too high.

What we need to do is pull the machine out 2 feet from the wall and tilt it back. This will expose all the parts we need to remove. The pump is first held on by two metal clips, pump will clip to frame arm with a screw driver through a hole for support. Next is the motor, first unplug the wire harness, maybe a white switch wire and two red wires in addition to unplug. Next there is two 1/4 inch hex screws and then the motor unclips, bottom one first. Now you can see the coupler, note how it is attached. Turn the spindle on each side lift with a screw driver to remove the flanges. To seat the new flanges I use a 1/2 deep well socket on a extension to tap flush the flanges, flush with the spindle. Now insert the rubber coupler at the gear case side and align to the motor and reverse the process and then test.

Here is a pic of what I wrote to you it will show you exactly how the machine breaks down, the three bolts hold the gear case on as in 9 and 10

My whirlpool ultimate Care II Heavy Duty Super Capacity Plus washer Very slightly agitates and don't spin dry

The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

My whirlpool heavy duty super capacity plus is acting funny. it will run water and then it i will not spin and will not drain water. it will agitate, but when it does it makes a funny noise. what could be...

Could be a few problems. Bad lid switch could be the problem but also could be other things. The agitator noise is something probably you should let a technician hear it could be as bad as a bad transmission. That could also be the cause of the other.

Whirlpool Ultimate Care Heavy Duty Washer will not spin

It sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. This is a very inexpensive and simple repair.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top
The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

Whirpool lsq9244eqo fills and drains but does not spin or agitate

It sounds like the agitator gripping teeth are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, pull the cap off and check the plastice teeth and four plastic hooks that grab the teeth. If they are worn out, then you will have to replace the agitator. To replace it, you will see a nut that is between the circlular teeth. Unscrew the nut and pull the agitator up hard.
