The easiest way to convert a word document to .pdf is to simply right-click on the file to see if there is an option to "convert to .pdf"., then left-click on that option.
What format did you save the document in? Different scanners use different default formats. Open the document and try "save as" a .pdf file, then you have a chance of editing it with any of the freeware pdf editors you can google and download. It's also possible to import it to Office Word and edit it there,if you have the pdf plug-in for Word.
