You may have the wrong iTunes for that update (you need the newest iTunes in order to restore iPhone's). You might also be installed a outdated iOS, or a higher version than the device you are running can handle.

try respring it (central + power buttons together and then connect to iTunes in safe mode,choose full restore (it will erase everything but if you have back up can be restored).

Error 9:

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops.

This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process.

This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, (DO NOT USE HUBS) restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

Hi, your i phone has problem in its Eprom either operating system is corrupted or the Eprom chip is damaged needs replacement. take it to a technician for flashing( soft ware re-installation )

When your restore fails, it usually tells you, Your iphone could not be restored, an unknown error occured(number). Get that number and either post it on here or call 800 my iphone with it.
