Craftsman 20 hp Garden Tractor 6 speed (manual) model 917.273030: Trying to change the axle oil seal. Pulled the wheel off and the C-Clip. The axle shaft is approx. 1" out past the face of the Hub. The C-clip is not against the Hub facing and I can't figure out what holds the Hub from sliding off the axle. Both are spline groved. I don't see a key or pin that holds the Hub sleeve to the axle spline. I'm I blind or what am I missing. Is the hub pressed onto the axle?

The "C" clip holds the hub on the axle. No it is not a press fit.

SOURCE: How to remove the drive pulley, and install a new Woodruff Key?

Wayne Train Hi Bobbyak, if you still need to know, there is no key. It is a D shaped shaft, the pulley has the D cutout built in. It is a tight fit to pull off, but it will come off with some wiggling effort. There is just enough room. Remove the belt. Mark the side facing the trans for when you refit. Don't give up and don't drop the transaxle. I just didn't catch the reason you wanted to remove the pulley.

Did you forget to reinsert the key or did it slide out while putting the wheel on. A quick way to check is if you remove the center cap and have someone put it in gear and try to go while you are watching the axle. If the axle is turning and the wheel is not then the key is missing.

Gears won't engage

when you removed the tires is the tires bolted on or do they have a clip around the axle if it has a clip around the axle then there should be a long sqare key that sits in axle as well as the wheel that key keeps the axle from just spinning in rim if that key is missing then replace it & you should be ready to go

the bar connecting the wheels is bent. this is easy to change. just pull the pins out on both sides and lift the rod out. you can straighten it in a vise or order a new one through sears. cost about $12. our local repair shop keeps them on hand.

Craftsman 20HP , can't stop freewheeling,

Sounds like your problem is the key in your rear wheel is missing or sheared, you have to remove the wheel @ tire assembly ,pull rubber cap off then clip to remove if one of the keys is sheared or gone it will go into gear and the brake will work ,but they will only stop the shaft without the key it will not move or brake becuase its not attached if you know what I mean.

Removing tire from SEARS CRAFTSMAN LT1000 TRACTOR.

You need to remove the black rubber cap from the center of the wheel. Remove the "C" clip from the axle and the wheel should come off. The rear tires will have a square key in it. Do not loose the key.
