Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
(this covers other smells as well!)

Bad odours could be coming from a few places.

  1. the plumbing u-bend of the washer's room or
  2. the fact that there is 'foul' water being left in the drum.
  3. No washes at 90 degree+ !
I would suggest checking the plumbing u-bend for trouble first, then following the notes on checking and cleaning the drain filter and the drain pump to ensure there is nothing 'obnoxious' hanging around the two of them! Finally run the occasional 90+ wash, or use specialised lower temperature powder/fluid, to kill bacteria.
Here are my complete and general guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!). These panels are either held on by (plasic) screws or will just pull off. Most filters are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT (alternatively use a wet vac as sensibly suggested by VinnyB1234!)
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.
If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck,
John C

Moldy smell in clothes, especially towels

need to clean the bellow ( rubber around door). theres a tablet you can buy called "Affresh". It will help to remove the moldy smell. just throw it in washer and run through a regular wash cycle. no clothes, just the tablet. If there is a clean cycle on the machine then use that cycle. Whenever you're finished washing, you should leave the door open for about 20-30 minutes so unit can air out. Also you should wipe around the glass and bellow after each use.

What does de mean on the display of the washing machine? Yesterday I ran a tub clean because my clothes have been smelling moldy. I have cleaned the rubber seal & leave the door open. Please help??

de means your door isn't closed completely.

The moldy smell is really common with this machine, and maybe all of them, but I have the LG TROMM and was ready to throw away all of my towels. Here's a solution I found that helped alot. First, Clorox makes a solution just for front-end loading machines. You run it through on a cycle with no clothes, that helps to clean it out.

I ran my towels through on the cotton/towel cycle on HOT, with nothing more than white vinegar filling the detergent dispenser. After that, I then ran them through again with just a bit of soap and fabric softener. They came out soft and smelling like new.

I read recently that we all use WAY too much soap in both our washers and dishwashers, even though that's what's recommended in the directions. Excess soap in clothes that doesn't get rinsed out will begin to smell moldy. So I now use about 1/4 of what the directions call for, and they come out fine. I have found, however, that I need to repeat the vinegar cycle once every few months. I think the problem is inherent in that model machine.

And that rubber seal? Disgusting! I clean it out regularly, but when it's full of water after every load of clothes, what do they think is going to happen??? You'll find that Clorox cycle will clean the seal pretty well, though. Good luck!

Smell after drying

Try drying your clothes without the dryer sheet and see if the smell is still there. If it is not, then the problem is the dryer sheet.
If it is, then you need to describe the smell better. Different people handle smells differently. What smells musty to you may smell fragrant to others.
You need to determine if the smell you don't like is really a musty smell, or is it a fragrance you don't like. Have some friends (not family members) smell the clothes and verify if what you are smelling is musty or fragrant.

It could also be that even though the clothes smell OK out of the washer, that the detergent you are using is the cause.

The machine smells moldy...

moldy smell, may not be mold at all, in fact most "moldy musty" smells actually come from user not using proper detergents, you NEED to be using an HE detergent and little amounts of that even. cut back on fabric \softneer if using, www.affresh.com new product to help alleviate this issue

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Thanks for your suggestion about looking in the lip of the seal. I found one of my three year old granddaughters socks. Also, the seal for very dirty so I mixed a 50% solution and 50% solution of chlorox and used an old towel rag to wipe and wash throughly around the lip seal.

I noted that the aluminum ring inside the washer had also accumulated a lot of dirt. With one hand and fingers I held the wet cholorx towel inside the ring and with the other hand spun the tub around several turns until I had removed all the dirt and grime.

It did have a moldy smell. I'll let you know if this fixed the problem.

Moldy smell in front load kenmore washer

I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.
