You need to take apart the PSP. To do that there are 4 screws in the back of the PSP. WARNING, this WILL void your warranty if you have one. Now, there are 3 screws visible, the last one is in the battery compartment under the batter under the sticker that says something about voiding your warranty if you take this sticker off. Unscrew the last screw and the front should come off nice and easy. Then you can clean and fix your key and screw it back together.

When I plug my PSP (type A) into my PC (Windows XP

Then do this:
  1. Connect the mini connector to the top of your PSP and the other end of the cable into a USB slot on your PC. For the best perfornance, connect your PSP to a USB 2.0 slot.
  2. Make sure the PSP is on.
  3. Scroll to the 'Settings' menu by pressing the left arrow on the PSP.
  4. Select 'USB Connection' using the up and down arrows on the control pad.
  5. Press the 'X' button.
  6. Your PC should detect the PSP device, and show it in Explorer as a new drive (for example, 'F:').

Down arrow key not working properply; cursor keeps moving up on its own: sometimes doesn't respond to down arrow key being pressed

u probably have sticky stuff and dirt in the directional pad, try this:take the battery out, make sure the power is off, pour a little alcohol in the the crack of the directional pad, then press the directional pad in the different directions to loosen it up, finally let the psp sit for a few hours til the alcohol dries (or blow in it) that sould loosen everything up, if that does not work you will have to open the unit and clean the pad thorougly...
