if the walking belt is turning in reverse, the drive motor is also turning in reverse. Check to see if the wires from the drive motor to the motor control board have been reversed.

Was the machine recently serviced? Drive motor or motor control board replaced?

there is no method to ease the tension of the spring. I just used vice grips to grab the end of the spring and pull it out of the ringlet. I used the same method to connect the spring on the new motor.
