I have a HP LaserJet 1320 printer. The printer is attached to a MacPro computer running MacOS 10.4.11, via Ethernet and a HP JetDiret 175X print server.
It will not print a 8Mb Photoshop file. After about 10 minutes, the printer will print multiple pages of code. I have to pull the tray out to stop the printer. The orange cancel button has no effect. I have to turn the printer off to clear the job. However, other files will print on the HP. And, this file will print on a Brother printer attached to the network and an Epson R280 attached by USB.
I also run Windows2000 on this machine, using VM Fusion Version 1.1.2. The 1320 will print a WordPad test file. It will print the default image installed in the “My Pictures” folder. It is a 10k, but takes about 5 minutes to print. When I tried to print the file in question, the system returned an error message, but eventually printed the document as a series of pages of code, similar to the output from the Mac OS. As with the file running under Mac OS, the Windows printing could not be stopped with the cancel button and the printer had to be turned off to clear the job.
Please help me solve this problem.
Thank you.

Yes, this is a PostScript Printer, but that shouldn't matter. I've used other PS printers and a 10k file should print instantly.
Thanks, but the printer is another room, so a USB cable won't reach. I suppose I could move the printer for testing, but that won't solve the problem. It shouldn't matter if it's networked or direct connected.
The printer seems to be operating normally. It does take a bit of time to print large bit map files, but I'm thinking it's the limitation of the printer. We had a power failure a few days ago and I'm thinking that reset the print server.
Also, I appreciate the email address for Mac help. When I contacted HP about the problem, they wanted $40 for the support call. For another $50 I would buy a new Brother printer and be done with HP.
Thanks for your help.

Have you checked to see how much memory needs to be installed on the 1320 for it to accept an 8Mb bitmap? If you have only 8Megs installed the available memory runs around 5.58 See also the following from HP knowledge base about a print server causing similar prbs:

LaserJet 1320 prints 1 or 2 lines of jibberish until it runs out of paper. No print jobs showing in printer folders. I deleted printer and drivers and then reinstalled, to no avail. Printer connected to Linksys wireless router and Trendnet wireless print server. Neither wired desktop or wireless laptop can print.

Well, it appears to have been a print server issue. I disconnected the power cord from the print server on a lark and when I put it back in, the printer was no longer going haywire. The print server system manager showed the printer as "Idle" with zero print jobs. I was able to print from the network computer. Looks like that's the end of that.
Some users also reported that a corrupt PSU (Printer Setup Utility) file could cause similar problems.
Also: You could also try emailing [email protected] with your problem.
Last thoughts: have you tried accessing your jetdirect by its IP adress in Safari ?
The other printers you mention are host based i.e. will use your MAC memory and CPU so you would not see a memory problem.
Have you tried printing by plugging the HP on a local USB port?
